Mall of Georgia Bans Shoppers After Confrontation

Incident occurred after the child of one of the women reportedly sat on and hit the child of the other woman.

Two women have been banned from the Mall of Georgia in Buford for a year after engaging in a verbal and physical confrontation inside the mall on Feb. 2. According to the Gwinnett County Police report, the altercation began when the child of one of the women reportedly sat on and hit the other woman's child. Initially, the argument was verbal. However, when one of the women referred to the other as a "black [expletive deleted]," the fight turned physical. Mall security had separated the women before police arrived. "Neither party sustained any significant injury and mall security did not wish to pursue any issue of disturbance inside the mall," the officer noted in the report. NEWS NEARBY: Several Break-ins Reported Involving Ford Trucks at Mall of Georgia

Gwinnett Police are probing a series of incidents involving punched or pried locks.

More Ford trucks were targeted by a thief or thieves last weekend in the Mall of Georgia area. Gwinnett County Police responded to four car break-ins on Jan. 19 -- two on Mall of Georgia Boulevard and two on Buford Drive. The incidents are the latest in a string of January car break-ins in which the locks on Ford F150s and Ford 250s have been pried or punched. According to Major John Strickland, GCPD North Precinct Commander, the department is closely monitoring the recent entering autos. "We are working closely with the Mall of Georgia Security and have increased patrols," Strickland wrote in an email to Patch. Gwinnett County Police are investigating several car break-ins that occurred on January 12 at the Mall of Georgia in Buford. In one of the incidents, a Louisiana woman said she parked her car at the mall at approximately 5:20 p.m. When she returned just over an hour later, she discovered her MacBook Pro, iPod Touch, Nikon camera, iPad, jewelry and Nokia cell phone were missing. The woman said one of the back doors to the car was unlocked when she got to the vehicle. The total value of the stolen items was estimated to be $3,000. A North Georgia woman took precautions to avoid becoming a crime victim during a recent visit to the Mall of Georgia, but her efforts proved inadequate. The woman said she parked her vehicle in the upper lot of J.C. Penney's at approximately 4 p.m. on Dec. 1. When she returned about 90 minutes later, she discovered her car had been entered. According to the police report, the woman had locked her doors and secured several purchases made earlier in the day in the trunk. The door locks were intact, but the weather stripping on the passenger side door had been damaged. Both the trunk and the glove box were open when the woman returned to her car. Robbers Strike Mall of Georgia Jewelry Store -- Buford Patch Two robbers escaped with over $5,000 worth of diamond jewelry during a Sept. 29 incident at the Mall of Georgia. Police were called to Empyrean Jewelers after a man reportedly snatched a .75-carat diamond solitaire ring and a set of 1-carat diamond solitaire princess cut earrings and ran from the store. A store employee told police two black males entered the store at approximately 1:20 p.m. and asked to see sets of 2-carat earrings. The employee advised that he did not have any 2-carat sets, but could show them some 1-carat sets. After the employee removed a set of 1-carat princess cut diamond earrings from the display case, the two males asked to see some matching rings. …

Stereo Stolen, Dashboard Damaged During Car Break-in at Mall of Georgia -- Buford Patch. A thief or thieves defeated the lock on a 2007 Hummer and stole approximately $1,250 worth of stereo equipment in a brazen car break-in at the Mall of Georgia. A Loganville woman parked her vehicle in the lower level parking lot of J.C. Penney just before 5 p.m. on Sept. 12. When she returned to her vehicle a little more than an hour later, she discovered someone had forced entry into her vehicle, pried off the center dashboard and removed a stereo unit, amplifier and subwoofer. Updated Aug. 6, 2012 A vehicle was destroyed by fire Saturday evening, Aug. 4, when flames broke out outside the Longhorn restaurant near the Mall of Georgia in Buford, according to a Gwinnett Fire spokesperson. Gwinnett Fire spokesperson Lt. Colin Rhoden said that a caller about 7 p.m. said that fire was close to the building, and Gwinnett Police noted that the fire was spreading quickly. Skeletal Remains Found in Buford

Individual walking on Brown Road makes the discovery not far from Mall of Georgia.

An individual walking in a heavily wooded area off Brown Road in unincorporated Buford Thursday afternoon made a gruesome discovery. According to Gwinnett County Police, the individual found a human skull and scattered skeletal remains a few hundred yards off Brown Road between Sunny Hill Road and Morgan Road. The entire area is located off Gravel Springs Road, a short distance from the Mall of Georgia. "It appears that the bones have been there for quite some time," said GCPD public information officer Cpl. Ed Ritter in a released statement. The Gwinnett County Police Department Homicide Unit is investigating. The search for additional remains continues today, Ritter added. Discover Mills Owner Misses Balloon Payment

Simon Property Group reportedly missed payment on a $135 million dollar loan.

More troubles for Gwinnett County malls. Analytics firm Trepp reports Simon Property Group missed a balloon payment on Discover Mills Mall in Lawrenceville. The company has a $135 million loan on the 1.2 million square foot mall, which was built in 2001. According to Trepp, Simon has "found it challenging to land take-out financing" on the mall, which has leases for anchor stores about to expire or recently expired. Off Saks' lease was up in November, while Burlington Coat Factory, Books-a-Million and Last Call Neiman Marcus' leases all expire in January 2012.  The mall has an occupancy rate of 79 percent as of the third quarter. Apple Outdoes Black Friday Sales Forecasts

Overall, a record number of shoppers visit stores nationwide over the holiday weekend.

Initial Black Friday sales figures are trickling in, and -- surprise -- Apple saw some whopping sales figures for the signature shopping day. According to a report in mashable.com, Apple had forecast four times the normal sales volume, and topped that by 7 p.m. Among the discounts were $101 off several laptop models, now presumably in less demand because of the iPad. Apple is the nation's most valuable publicly owned company, with a market cap of more than $330 billion. The company has a retail store at the Mall of Georgia in Buford. This year was expected to be particularly attractive to online shoppers. According to a report from comScore, Black Friday saw $816 million in online sales, a 26 percent increase over last year.
