City Council veteran and Suwanee native to succeed Williams. Ireland elected to City Council post.
Updated Nov. 9, 2011 Jimmy Burnette, a Suwanee native and member of City Council since 1996, was elected mayor of the city Tuesday. Burnette will succeed Dave Williams, who is leaving the office after one term. Assuming that election results are certified by the Georgia Secretary of State's office, Burnette will be sworn into office in January. Also Tuesday, Doug Ireland was elected to City Council. He will fill the post vacated by Burnette. Sunday alcohol sales were approved by Suwanee voters, getting 75 percent of the ballots cast, city officials said. Dick Goodman was running unopposed for a full council term. Burnette, 59, is a resident of the Old Town area and is solidly behind the changes that have come to the city since 2001. "Let's…

Pittman to face Burnette, Spiro to run against Ireland in November.
Two of the three political races at Suwanee City Hall in November will have opposition, including mayor. Dan Pittman, a local businessman, qualified Wednesday to run against Jimmy Burnette for mayor. And Jimmy Spiro qualified Wednesday to run against Doug Ireland for City Council. Dick Goodman, a current City Council member, is assured of a full term since no one qualified to run against him. He was elected to the council in 2009. Pittman, 49, is a 14-year Suwanee resident and DeKalb County native. He will be facing an incumbent council member and a member of one of Suwanee's oldest families. Pittman is opposed to the current direction of City Hall, which he feels has a big-goverment, big-spending approach. "When I first moved to Suwanee, …

Suwanee mayoral candidate has tradition and experience.
Updated 8:49 a.m., July 21, 2011 The family tradition is undeniable. But it likely won't be a case of old-line politics if Jimmy Burnette is elected mayor of Suwanee in November. Burnette is viewed by many as progressive and an agent of growth in Suwanee, which added almost 7,000 residents in the past decade. "It's unique in that Jimmy is a native son," said fellow Suwanee Council Member Dick Goodman on Tuesday, when Burnette formally announced his candidacy for mayor. "He's seen the change ... he's been instrumental in the changes that we all enjoy." Burnette, a council member since 1996 and son of a former Suwanee council member, is the first person to formally declare for the post that will be vacated by Dave Williams, who is not …

Longtime council member and Suwanee native makes it official Tuesday.
As expected, Suwanee City Council member Jimmy Burnette said Tuesday morning that he will run for mayor this year. Surrounded by family and friends in front of City Hall, Burnette formally moved forward to succeed Dave Williams, who will not run for re-election after one term. He is Suwanee's longest-serving council member, having been on the panel since 1996. He likely will face no opposition from within City Hall, and no one outside city government has declared interest in the job. "We're looking to grow (jobs)," Burnette said shortly after his formal announcement. The family has deep roots in Suwanee. Burnette's late father, James Sr., was a Suwanee council member from 1963-95. Burnette Road, which is part of the McGinnis Ferry Road/I-…

Council member's family has a long history in Suwanee.
Someone with deep family roots in Suwanee may be its next mayor. Council member James "Jimmy" Burnette Jr. said Thursday that he's considering running for mayor this year. The position is expected to become vacant because Mayor Dave Williams has indicated that he will not run for a second term. "I'm talking it over with the decision-makers (family)," Burnette said before Thursday's City Council work session. Burnette Jr. has been on the Suwanee council since 1996. His father was a council member for 32 years (1963-95). Burnette Road in Suwanee is named after the family. Burnette Jr. is a residential remodeler. But Burnette Jr. likely would bring his own ideas to the top job, should he run and win. "Jimmy's very progressive," said former …
