County and state officials formally dedicate the $20.4 million effort, which includes a bridge over the interstate.
Updated 4:32 p.m., Oct. 4, 2011 It didn't take Gwinnett District 1 Commissioner Shirley Lasseter long Tuesday to put the McGinnis Ferry Road/I-85 project in perspective. "It takes me straight to my daughter's house (in Suwanee)," Lasseter said in Suwanee as county and state officials gathered for the formal dedication of the project that opened in August. Work began on the $20.4 million effort in 2009. "I-85 crosses the heart of my district, and it challenges us to find new ways to cross it," Lasseter continued. Charlotte Nash, Mike Beaudreau, John Heard and Lynette Howard were the other Gwinnett commissioners who joined Lasseter at Tuesday's ribbon-cutting. Also present was Dan Foster, Suwanee City Council member, and various county and …

Updated 8:45 a.m., Sept. 21, 2011 The planned opening of four new lanes of Northbrook Parkway in Suwanee has been delayed until Monday, Sept. 26. This will extend the road from its current end at the Gwinnett Public Schools' headquarters to a new intersection with Old Peachtree Road, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced. The planned Tuesday opening did not come off because crews did not finish the required work, Georgia DOT spokesperson Teri Pope said. Raised pavement markers will be installed on Northbrook Parkway this weekend, weather permitting. “Opening this project completes a four lane parallel route on the east side of Interstate 85 from Old Peachtree Road on the north end to SR 378/Beaver Ruin Road on the south end," …

'A neat experience' for a Suwanee visitor to cross the new bridge early.
It was like a Black Friday special or buying concert tickets. Motorists began lining up about 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Super H store in Suwanee. Of course, they wanted to be the first to traverse the new bridge over I-85. "It was a neat experience," said Wade Meadows of Opelika, Ala., who is visiting friends in Gwinnett. He was clued in by a member of the Snell family, which has connections with E.R. Snell, the construction company that handled the $20.4 million project. Engineers from the Georgia Department of Transportation began the opening process about 10 a.m. by checking the new traffic signal at the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road/McGinnis Ferry Road intersection. Then traffic moved on to the signal at McGinnis Ferry/Old Peachtree, near the…

Extension from Satellite Boulevard to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road is operational.
With horns sounding, cars drove across the new McGinnis Ferry Road bridge over I-85 on Tuesday morning. About 10:45 a.m., cars began driving across the bridge from the new intersection with Old Peachtree Road. A few moments later, Georgia DOT officials removed orange barrells on the other side of the bridge, and traffic flowed toward Old Peachtree from Satellite Boulevard. In total, the new stretch of 2.4 miles runs from Satellite Boulevard to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. It provides new connections with Gwinco Boulevard (to be renamed Celebration Drive), Old Peachtree Road and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. Also, Northolt Parkway extends from Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road near the new bridge. Suwanee Patch will have more coverage of this event.

Updated Aug. 26, 2011 McGinnis Ferry Road's new four-lane extension over I-85, which will provide major traffic relief for Suwanee, will open mid-morning Tuesday, Aug. 30, officials announced Thursday. "This project is coming to a close," Georgia DOT engineer Randall Davis said in a media release. The $20.7 million project, which uses federal stimulus funds, has been going since planning began in the early part of the past decade. The chief feature is a 2.67-mile, four-lane extension that runs over the interstate just east of Satellite Boulevard; there is no freeway access from this bridge. "The extension will operate almost like a bypass for the interchange of I-85 and SR 317 (exit 111). If the interstate isn’t your destination, you can …

If all goes well, Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee will become a four-lane, divided road Monday, Aug. 15. Georgia Department of Transportation engineers have been working on widening the road from Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road to Peachtree Trails Drive, and weather permitting, the work will soon be done. “To widen Old Peachtree to a four-lane divided highway, we built two new lanes. Traffic is now running on the 'new lanes.' We are finishing up the reconstruction of those two 'original' lanes to meet the new design. Monday by mid-morning, traffic will be split to use the outside lane on each side of the median," Georgia DOT engineer Randall Davis said in a media release. "There is still some paving to finish and work to the median of the …

Work by the Georgia Department of Transportation will affect traffic Monday on several Suwanee streets as well as I-85, according to a DOT news release. Monday night, crews will close the inside/left lanes of I-85 northbound and southbound 8 p.m.-5 a.m. to remove wooden supports that are no longer needed, and to paint. Lanes will be closed overnight on Burnette Road as workers lay asphalt; work on Burnette should take 3-4 days, depending on weather, and then work will move to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. Also, Gwinco Boulevard traffic will be right-turn-in, right-turn-out only at Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, the DOT said. Gwinco soon will be renamed Celebration Drive in conjunction with the work. This is part of the McGinnis Ferry Road/I-85…

Suwanee commuters already are benefiting from the McGinnis Ferry Road project at Interstate 85. Lanes of traffic are open for motorists on Burnette Road heading toward Satellite Boulevard. And work continues on new lanes on Old Peachtree Road near Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. The project, which involves more than $20 million in land deals and construction costs, is scheduled to be completed in September. Federal stimulus funds also were used. The Georgia Department of Transportation work also involves extending McGinnis Ferry Road over I-85 via a four-lane bridge, which will connect Satellite Boulevard with such streets as Gwinco Boulevard and provide a quicker route to cities such as Lawrenceville.

Traffic will be shifted this week on Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee. The work is part of the $20.4 million McGinnis Ferry Road project, which is expected to be completed in September. The shift will happen from SR 317 (Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road) to Peachtree Trails Drive by Tuesday midafternoon, weather permitting. Two new lanes have been constructed, and the traffic shift will allow workers to remove asphalt from the older lanes and rebuild those lanes. "As those lanes finish, traffic will be split to run in one direction on each side of the median and two lanes will be opened in each direction,” explained state Department of Transportation engineer Randall Davis in a media release. Also, a stop sign will be installed for Old Peachtree …

Work on the Suwanee road is part of the McGinnis Ferry/I-85 project.
Weather permitting, the section of Northolt Parkway from Burnette Road to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road (SR 317) will reopen Friday, April 15, at 10 a.m. This had been closed as part of the I-85/McGinnis Ferry project in Suwanee being handled by the Georgia Department of Transportation. “Northolt was closed so the grade of the roadway could be lowered by four feet. This improved sight distance drivers can see and therefore improved safety for Northolt and Burnette Road. Northolt will be reopen for you to use by 10 a.m. tomorrow. We are doing some finish work today and will restripe it tomorrow morning,” DOT District Construction Engineer Randall Davis said in a news release. The McGinnis Ferry project, scheduled for a September 2011 …
