Bradley Completes Comeback to Win 93rd PGA

Five down with four holes left, Keegan Bradley responded by forcing a playoff and defeated Jason Dufner in extra holes.

Keegan Bradley appeared to be finished with four holes remaining in the 93rd PGA Championship. He was five shots behind and past the point of running out of time when he produced the most stirring finish of any recent grand slam event. Bradley made birdies on the 16th and 17th holes and watched as Jason Dufner made bogeys at No. 15, 16 and 17 to force a three-hole aggregate playoff. Bradley won the first two extra holes and wound up defeating Dufner by one shot to win his first major championship. When he knocked in a one-footer to win the tournament, Bradley responded with several emphatic fist pumps. Seconds later he was joined on the green by his family for a massive group hug. Minutes later he was in the media interview area, taking a …

Rookie Steele Looks for Career-Changing Win

Brendan Steele, Jason Dufner enter final round of PGA Championship tied for lead. Each man is looking for his first major title.

It’s already been a great year for Brendan Steele. Depending on what happens Sunday, it could be a career-shaping season. Steele, a rookie on the PGA Tour, is tied for the lead at the 93rd PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Steele shot a 66 on Saturday to pull into a tie for first place with Jason Dufner at 7-under 203. For Steele, it’s a long way from playing the Nationwide Tour, where he spent the last three seasons. He earned a promotion to the PGA Tour by finishing sixth on that tour’s money list and has proven he belongs. He won the Valero Texas Open earlier this season and has three other top-25s. “It’s been a wild ride,” Steele said. It will get even wilder if he can pull off a championship conclusion at the Atlanta …

Athletic Club Instructor Gets Call to Play

Veteran Verplank to start 2 shots off lead; first-timers have history of success at club.

Atlanta Athletic Club teaching professional Chan Reeves got a between-the-ropes look at the PGA Championship on Saturday. He was chosen to play as a non-competing marker during the third round and spent the morning playing alongside Paul Casey. “Very few people have the opportunity to do it,” Reeves said. “To tee it up with Paul Casey – needless to say, last night wasn’t the best night of sleep; you’re nervous.” An odd number of players made the cut and since the final two rounds of the championship are contested as twosomes, one player was left without a partner. In that instance a marker plays along the competitor to help him keep pace. Reeves learned he would be the marker via a phone call from director of golf Rick Anderson. He was …

PGA Update: Toms Rejoins the Contenders

The 2001 PGA champion vaults into contention with a third-round 65 at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

David Toms is trying to create a new set of memories this week at the PGA Championship. Toms, celebrating the 10th anniversary of his victory at the Atlanta Athletic Club, has put himself in contention to win again. Toms shot a 5-under 65 on Saturday and will begin the final round at 2-under par. “Obviously it will take a great round (Sunday), but you never know,” Toms said. “That was the goal of the day, to have a good round. I didn’t know it was going to be a great round. I just wanted to give myself a chance to have that hot round maybe like Steve Stricker did the first day to have a chance. Now, if I can have one of those days, I certainly will be in the mix.” Toms made the turn in even par, but caught fire on the back. He had an eagle…

Dufner a Surprise Leader at PGA

Former Auburn star had missed the cut in five of his last six starts, but shares the second-round lead with rookie Keegan Bradley.

There weren’t many voices trumpeting the chances of Jason Dufner prior to the 93rd PGA Championship. But his chorus of supporters is starting to grow after his performance in the second round at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Dufner is tied with Keegan Bradley for the 36-hole lead at the PGA Championship at 5-under par 135. Dufner, the former Auburn University standout, shot a 65, while Bradley had a 64. They lead a group at 4-under 136 that includes D.A. Points, John Senden, Scott Verplank and former U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk. Dufner had missed the cut in five of his last six events leading up to the PGA Championship. That streak of futile play helped negate the positive effects of back-to-back top-10s this spring at New Orleans and The …

Tiger Misses the Cut at PGA Championship

For the first time in his storied career, Tiger Woods has missed the cut at the PGA Championship.

It was a bad week for Tiger Woods. Not only did the most famous golfer in the world fail to make the cut at the PGA Championship, he also failed to pick up enough points to qualify for the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs. Woods played better on Friday, following his miserable first-round 77 with a 73, but that was six away from making the cut. And by failing to pick up any FedEx Cup points, Woods didn't get in the Top 125 that qualify for the playoffs. That means he won't be playing at The Tour Championship next month at East Lake. Wood had little chance to make the cut at the Atlanta Athletic Club when the day started, but all hope was lost when he made back-to-back double-bogeys at No. 11 and 12. In 36 holes, Woods had 12 holes where he …

Stricker's Record Tying 63 Takes PGA Lead

Wisconsin native comes near record in first round at Johns Creek.

Steve Stricker is a step closer to filling the only hole remaining in his impressive career resume. The self-effacing man from Wisconsin honed in on his first major championship Thursday, tying a PGA Championship record by shooting 63 in the first round to take the first-round lead at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Stricker shot a 7-under 63, becoming the 11thplayer in tournament history to match that score. He tied the competitive course record set by Mark O'Meara at the 2001 PGA Championship and leads Jerry Kelly, his close friend and fellow Cheesehead, by two shots. “You know, 63 is that number that no one has gotten under,” Stricker said. “But I never really thought about it at all today. (Caddie Jimmy Johnson) told me after I missed the …

Fans Savor First Day of PGA

As the PGA Championship got under way on Monday with Day 1 of practice rounds, fans began to trickle into the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek. "When I first found out the PGA was coming here, I jumped on it right away and ordered tickets," said Cumming resident Adam Eason, who brought his daughter, Elizabeth, along. He said he plans to attend all week. Plenty of children could be seen as one adult ticket will get in up to four children. The volunteer contingent was also on hand. Cheryl and Rody Broome came all the way from Amelia Island, Fla., to volunteer in the PGA Pro Shop. Members of the Atlanta Athletic Club, they say they volunteer for numerous championship events. Also making an appearance was the MetLife blimp, which could be …
