A North Georgia woman took precautions to avoid becoming a crime victim during a recent visit to the Mall of Georgia, but her efforts proved inadequate. The woman said she parked her vehicle in the upper lot of J.C. Penney's at approximately 4 p.m. on Dec. 1. When she returned about 90 minutes later, she discovered her car had been entered. According to the police report, the woman had locked her doors and secured several purchases made earlier in the day in the trunk. The door locks were intact, but the weather stripping on the passenger side door had been damaged. Both the trunk and the glove box were open when the woman returned to her car. Area voters spoke loud and clear in Tuesday's election, with over 70 percent of the voters soundly voting NO on the penny sales tax increase to support area public transportation initiatives. Whether you were on the yes or no side of the issue, what we can all agree on is that Atlanta area traffic is nightmarish, one of the worst in the nation, and is unacceptable to the vast majority of drivers. However, the bottom line is that building new infrastructure doesn't necessarily guarantee people would choose to use public transportation as a means to get from point A to point B anyway.  We're in the South after all, in a city deep seeded in tradition and in general, with a population resistance to change.  And unfortunately, people here …

Robin: despite my snarrky comment, I do get your point. The transportation infrastructure of the metro fails commuters on all ends -- both drivers and transit riders. In my opinion, it's a product of the sprawling built environment, low connectivity of roads and the lack of logical planning for development and transportation together (but that's another conversation). Lights, Camera, Action in Gwinnett

The Avocet neighborhood in Peachtree Corners gained celebrity status as the subdivision was transformed for a TV commercial shoot recently.

A recent Friday was not a typical end-of-the-week kind of day for the Avocet neighborhood. Instead of a wind-down day before the long Memorial Day weekend, the neighborhood was filled with actors, cameras and directors in the Peachtree Corners subdivision preparing to shoot a TV commercial. Signs at the subdivision entrance gave a clue that something big was going on with directional signs for trucks, crews, etc. Large trucks and trailers were parked along the side streets to accommodate the actors and film crew. But the neighbors took it in stride, enjoying the moment as they watched the street crawling with some 35 film crew setting up cameras and props while some 15 actors waited in the shade nearby until they were called. Peachtree Corners' City Council Sworn In

It's official -- Gwinnett's newest and largest city has a full-fledged City Council.

In a Sunday ceremony before friends, family, civic leaders and dignitaries, Peachtree Corners' first city council was sworn in during a special ceremony that took place in the Hunnicut Ballroom of the Hilton Hotel. Over 300 people witnessed the city's new mayor and six council members as each came forward and took the oath of office. Warren P. Davis, Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge, officiated. For this community of some 38,000, it was a culmination of a journey as its citizens watched the process unfold. First as legislation made its way to Gov. Peachtree Corners-Berkeley Lake Bill Changes Sought

The measure that would annex some businesses from Peachtree Corners to Berkeley Lake heads back to the House.

The House legislation introduced by State Rep. Tom Rice that called for 131 businesses previously identified as part of the new city of Peachtree Corners to be annexed into Berkeley Lake has been returned by the Senate for amendments. On Monday, H.B. 956 was on the calendar to be reviewed and possibly approved by the Senate Committee on State and Local Governmental Operations (SLGO). However, according to records reviewed online, Senator David Shafer, who represents Duluth and Berkeley Lake, has requested amendments to the current bill. "Senator Shafer has amended the bill," explained Rice in an email. "It will pass the Senate in amended form.  It must come back to the House for my agreement." Peachtree Corners-Berkeley Lake Bill Now in Senate

The legislation would annex 161 Peachtree Corners businesses into the city limits of Berkeley Lake before the new city formally takes effect.

  A number of Peachtree Corners residents were alarmed to learn that a legislative bill that would move 161 businesses from the new city into the City of Berkeley Lake had been approved by the House and was awaiting review by the Senate. If approved by the Senate the bill (H.B. 956) would move to Gov. Nathan Deal's office for his signature and final approval. The controversial bill came to light just days before Peachtree Corners was to hold its first city elections March 6, 2012. State Rep. Tom Rice, who introduced the bill explained it was to help ward of a possible lengthy and expensive lawsuit between the two cities.
