Arts in the Park festival returns Saturday, and SculpTour 2013 also debuts.
Suwanee will get a double dose of arts Saturday (May 18). The Arts in the Park festival returns to Town Center Park for its 2013 run. And as in past years, that will coincide with the official rollout of the SculpTour exhibits. As noted in a city news release, "Art Splash" is the theme for the 2013 festival, which is organized by the North Gwinnett Arts Association (NGAA) and co-sponsored by the city. The festival will run 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Some 60 artists will exhibit, sell, and demonstrate their art; several performance artists will entertain; and attendees will be invited to create their own art pieces through a chalk art competition and community art program. The third run of the outdoor art exhibit officially rolls out May 18.
The official debut date is May 18, to coordinate with Arts In The Park 2013. However, some exhibits for SculpTour 2013, the walkable, outdoor art exhibit in Suwanee, already are on display in the Town Center area. One is in the park area, and another is on display near the Town Center merchants (see the attached photos). The 2013 edition of SculpTour -- the third such exhibit -- will be a 22-month run, concluding in March 2015. As before, exhibits will be situated around the Town Center area, with an eventual "people's choice" voting winner to be purchased for permanent display. The 2012 run has ended. The newest SculpTour will roll out in May.
Updated 2:51 p.m. Suwanee officials have closed the books on the second edition of the SculpTour outdoor art program. And two of the pieces will be bound for another city park. According to city documents, "Weathervane" and "Audubon Watcher" will be purchased by the city, and are proposed to be relocated to Sims Lake Park. "Weathervane," by Al Garnto, was the "people's choice" winner in voting on the city website. Sims Lake Part thus is becoming a sort of second exhibit site for SculpTour. Last year, "Sunset" -- one of the original SculpTour works -- was purchased by the Rohloff family and donated to the city. The walkable outdoor art exhibit is ramping up for a third run.
Suwanee will tweak its popular SculpTour program for 2013 by giving it a longer life -- two years. According to a news release, city officials have issued another Request For Proposals for the third run of the walkable, outdoor art exhibit. And when SculpTour 2013 debuts in May, plans call for it to be in place for 22 months. "SculpTour has received an enthusiastic, positive response from visitors and the community," Economic and Community Development Director Denise Brinson said in the release. A Statesboro artist will develop a display for Remembrance, which will be placed in Town Center Park.
Suwanee officials have selected a Georgia Southern art teacher to develop a display for their 9/11 artifact, and they want it placed in Town Center Park near Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. City Council members were briefed Thursday (November 15) at a work session on the developments. A Suwanee woman's late sister now has a SculpTour piece at a park in her honor.
A family memorial in Suwanee also marks a couple of firsts for the city. The Rohloff family's effort to purchase and donate a SculpTour 2011 piece as a memorial for Cathy Rohloff's late sister now is reality. The piece, "Sunset," was mounted and put on display Saturday (Sept. 22) at Sims Lake Park. Also, it marks the first time that a piece of public art has been displayed in Sims Lake Park, and it is believed to be the first SculpTour piece that has been sold through private fund-raising efforts. Again putting a digital touch on their well-known arts program, Suwanee city officials have developed an app for the SculpTour 2012 public art display. According to a city news release, City Hall is the starting point of the 2012 Suwanee SculpTour guided audio tour/podcast. It provides walking directions to and information about each of the 15 sculptures included in the exhibit, as well as insights from the 11 participating artists. As they did on the app for the SculpTour 2011, Annette Phelps, City Hall receptionist, and Council Member Dick Goodman (also chairman of the Public Arts Commission) lead the tour. The City Of Suwanee includes public art in its economic development strategy, and there are several recent instances that demonstrate that this is working. Several exhibits from the first two SculpTour displays have been purchased either by the city or by local businesses and individuals. -- What is your favorite SculpTour piece?
