The walkable, outdoor art exhibit is an effort by the city's Public Arts Commission, which uses art as an economic development tool. QuikTrip is a sponsor of SculpTour 2012. Suwanee Woman Wants Art Memorial for Sister

A Suwanee woman is raising money to buy a SculpTour piece in honor of her sister, who died recently at 38.

Updated 11:28 a.m., April 17 Cathy Rohloff and her sister were not much alike. Rohloff is the practical, disciplined type who works in business intelligence. Laura Sanders-Neidlinger, her younger sister, was the consummate fun-loving free sprit. This was typified by her hair braids, which did not match. One thing they had in common, though, was a love of art. And now Rohloff sees that as a way to keep the memory of her sister alive. Laura Sanders-Neidlinger died March 17 at age 38, after a battle with cervical cancer. So the feelings still are strong as Rohloff talks of her sister and a way to make her memory live on in Suwanee, a town Laura loved. "She used to draw for fun," Rohloff recalled of her sister. "My daughter (age 23) has a …

Suwanee Wants Digital App for SculpTour Patrons

City Council also recognizes North Gwinnett Arts Association leader.

Suwanee's never-ending eye for art is yielding a new wrinkle: electronic audio for people touring SculpTour. City Council on Tuesday gave the OK for city staff to apply for a $3,500 grant from the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau; the money would be used to produce a digital tool for smartphones that could be used in conjunction with the city's walkable outdoor art exhibit. Denise Brinson, Suwanee's director of economic development, said the audio would be in the form of an app or podcast; it should be available in 30-45 days. Suwanee Gets a Piece of 9/11 History

Remnant of World Trade Center arrives Thursday and awaits a permanent site in the city.

Almost 10 years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, a piece of the destroyed World Trade Center towers has made its way to Suwanee. The journey for the 1,600-pound piece of steel began about a year ago when the Port Authority of New York contacted various municipalities in the U.S. about their interest in remnants from the attacks. Suwanee responded. It was being done in connection with the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The final step came this week, when the artifact left a JFK airport hangar in Jamaica, N.Y., on Tuesday and arrived at a UPS shipping center in the Sugarloaf area Thursday morning. UPS worked the final leg to Suwanee public works headquarters off Buford Highway. Suwanee officials only were responsible for the $1…

SculpTour Voting Open in Suwanee

Residents can select their favorite piece from the city's outdoor exhibit.

Suwanee's walkable outdoor museum has reached the voting stages. Residents can now vote for their favorite item in SculpTour, a 15-piece exhibit of public art that is spread around town, most in or very close to Town Center. Voting is available online, via QR codes on the pieces themselves, or via paper ballots. The winner will be announced next March, and that sculpture will be purchased by the city for permanent display. The exhibit is the city's first significant effort at public art, and is being funded totally by private donations. A map of SculpTour, which also includes city-owned pieces such as the mural on the back of the amphitheater stage at Town Center park, is on the city's website: www.suwanee.com.
