The mascot makes an Opening Day promise to fans.
Chopper, the Gwinnett Braves' costumed mascot, may be trying to make Opening Day his personal Groundhog Day. With all the unseasonably cool spring weather in 2013, Chopper has made a promise to fans. If the temperature dips below 50 degrees on April 4 (before the third inning), free ticket vouchers will be distributed to fans in attendance at Coolray Field. The vouchers will be good for another 2013 home game. The G-Braves will open their fifth season at Coolray Field on April 4, vs. the Charlotte Knights. “Opening Day will be the real start of spring weather. Updated 8:21 a.m., March 26 Snow flurries have been reported Tuesday in Suwanee and elsewhere in metro Atlanta. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 20 percent chance of light snow before 10 a.m. Tuesday (March 26). Also, WSB TV has video of snow in Stone Mountain, and said there are Twitter reports of snow in Peachtree Corners and Alpharetta. Adding another twist the unusual 2013 spring weather -- warning of "high fire weather conditions." Spring is off to a slow start in 2013.
Attention, Suwanee. It may be spring, but there still is winter in the air. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has a freeze warning AND a wind advisory in effect for Monday, March 25. The freeze warning is in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday (March 26). And the wind advisory is good until 6 p.m. Monday evening. Motorists and boaters are warned to be cautious. The advisories read in part: FREEZING TEMPERATURES WILL IMPACT EARLY BUDDING AND FLOWERING VEGETATION. STRONG WINDS CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT. ROUGH CHOP COULD OCCUR ON AREA LAKES...BOATERS SHOULD ALSO USE EXTRA CAUTION. THESE WINDS COULD KNOCK MEDIUM TO LARGE LIMBS FROM TREES AND EVEN BLOW DOWN WEAK OR DROUGHT STRESSED TREES. -- Patch will have updates on severe weather.

AHEAD OF THIS FRONT...AN AREA OF SHOWERS AND EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS HAS ALREADY BEGUN TO MOVE INTO NW GEORGIA. All that lovely spring weather over the weekend in Suwanee soon will be a distant memory. Forecasts are for hazardous weather for the area Monday evening (March 18). The National Weather Service says in a statement that storms will move into the Gwinnett area in the afternoon. The alert says "strong to severe storms with large hail" are possible, with the "risk of an isolated tornado." New rainfall amounts from one-fourth to one-half an an inch are possible. The NWS alert says in part: STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE TODAY INTO TONIGHT ... An advisory extends to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with warnings for drivers.
Another dose of severe weather is expected in Suwanee on Wednesday, after the thunderstorm watch of Tuesday evening. Watch out for wind. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a wind advisory for Suwanee and Gwinnett, extending to 7 p.m. on March 6. Gusts up to 40 mph are possible, the alert said. The advisory reads in part: A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF AT LEAST 20 MPH...OR GUSTS TO 35 MPH OR STRONGER ARE EXPECTED. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN TOPPLE TREES OR BRING DOWN LARGE BRANCHES AND WILL MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. USE EXTRA CAUTION. The National Weather Service is teaming with the county to inform and recruit severe weather observers.
Attention, storm chasers and severe weather aficionados. Gwinnett County and the National Weather Service want you. The county and the National Weather Service are teaming to offer a free "storm spotter" class on Monday, March 4. The class will be at 7 p.m. at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville, according to a county newsletter. The class is free. The class will be taught by Barry Gooden, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
