Public Storage gets a rezoning OK for its growth.
With the retail real estate market still struggling in Suwanee, a business is capitalizing on that for its own expansion needs. Public Storage won rezoning approval Tuesday from the Suwanee City Council to convert some empty retail suites into storage cubicles. Patrick Higgins, an architect for Public Storage (formerly McGinnis Ferry Self Storage), told council members Tuesday that about 11,000 square feet of retail space would be converted to storage areas. The sizes would vary, from 5'x5', to 10'x15'. The retail space has been sitting vacant since the development on McGinnis Ferry Road near Scales Road was completed in 2006. "The market for (retail) tenants is still soft," Higgins said. He said self-storage "is doing very well." Indeed, …

A Mexican eatery could open soon near I-85. Share your thoughts.
The Suwanee dining scene soon could get yet another addition, as a Mexican restaurant plans to open in a shopping plaza near I-85. Senor Quintin Mex Grill plans to open shop at 2855 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, and it has applied for an alcoholic beverage license with the city. The license could be approved at Tuesday's City Council meeting at City Hall. According to the Facebook site, the restaurant plans to open in January 2013. The eatery plans to open in the site now occupied by Shroomers, which is closing. This is the same Horizon Village shopping plaza that houses the Movie Tavern. In 2012, restaurants opening in Suwanee include Hammerhead's, Gulf Coast Grill, Twisted Taco and Tilted Kilt. And the area's top fine dining/entertainment …

A self-storage facility could be built on a lot that now holds a vacant building.
Such is Suwanee officials' desire to improve the Gateway area of the city that they are willing to deviate from their planning efforts to allow a self-storage facility to be built near I-85. The city's planning officials have recommended that City Council approve rezoning of property at 345 Sawmill Drive to light industrial to allow for the development. Approval could come at Tuesday's council meeting. The land currently is owned by Regency Church of God, according to city documents, and sits behind a Chevron gas station that is closest to the I-85 ramp. A vacant building that once housed a Waffle House is on the property. The Gateway area roughly extends from I-85 (Exit 111) to Satellite Boulevard along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, and it …

Brooks eyeing District 1 seat held by Duluth's Lasseter. 'I consider Jace a friend,' Lasseter said.
Updated 12:44 p.m. Sept. 16, 2011 Suwanee City Council member Jace Brooks announced Friday that he will seek election to the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners in 2012. He would be running for the District 1 post currently held by first-term Commissioner Shirley Lasseter of Duluth. Brooks has been a member of the Suwanee City Council since 2002; as the current Mayor Pro Tem, he presides over government meetings when Mayor Dave Williams is absent. Brooks' current term in Suwanee ends in 2013. If Brooks indeed qualifies to run for the Gwinnett office, he would resign the Suwanee post and a special election would be held, according to Suwanee City Manager Marty Allen. Lasseter, a former mayor of Duluth, said in an email Friday: "Jace is a…

City Council also approves $930,000 fund transfer to cover SPLOST shortfall.
Updated 5:25 a.m., June 3, 2011 Suwanee has become the third city in Gwinnett County to approve a public referendum on allowing packaged alcohol sales on Sunday. The City Council voted 5-0 Tuesday to place the matter on the ballot for the Nov. 8 municipal election. Mayor Dave Williams was not at the regular May meeting; Mayor Pro Tem Jace Brooks presided. Also Tuesday, the Suwanee council approved transferring about $930,000 from the city's general fund for Fiscal Year 2011 to cover lower than expected revenue from SPLOST. The sales tax money from Gwinnett County had been earmarked for capital spending projects. Lilburn and Loganville already had OK'd a public vote on Sunday alcohol sales for off-premises consumption. Georgia's new law …

Tuesday meeting has several key items.
Dealing with a SPLOST shortfall of about $750,000 will be among the items that Suwanee City Council members will consider at Tuesday's meeting. Also on the agenda is calling for a public vote this November on allowing Sunday alcohol sales in the city limits, per the new state law. Suwanee officials already had discussed with council members that they were expecting a downturn in SPLOST revenue from Gwinnett County because of the struggling economy. Now they are proposing to shift about $930,000 from the city's general fund for fiscal year 2011 to maintain capital spending projects. This would add almost 8 percent to the city's 2011 budget, but City Manager Marty Allen said Suwanee's financial picture remains strong. High on the list of …

Work to begin this year on $1.7 million in improvements.
After months of revisions, Suwanee's City Council unanimously approved Tuesday a blueprint for improvements to sidewalks, street crossings and trails in various areas of town. The Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan is designed to provide connections from residential areas to the Town Center and Old Town areas. Also a priority are enhanced pedestrian crossings on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Tier I of the plan is to be implemented from 2011-15 for $1.7 million; there are 43 projects in the entire plan, which runs beyond 2030. Among the plan's top priorities: -- Sidewalk along Buford Highway to sidewalks at Dollar Circle and near Ruby Forest subdivision; -- greeway trail from Ruby Forest to George Pierce Park. -- sidewalk along Suwanee Dam Road …

Enhancement for sidewalks and pedestrian crossings are being reviewed.
For the third straight month, Suwanee City Council will consider a transportation plan that would mean improvements for pedestrians and cyclists in various areas of town. The Pedestrian Bicycle Plan, originally known as the Alternate Modes Transportation Plan, would mean some $1.5 million in new sidewalks and crossings. The work in Tier I of the plan would be implemented in 2011-15. Council began reviewing the proposal heavily this year, but delayed voting on it at the February and March meetings. The April meeting is Tuesday at City Hall. Pond and Co. of Norcross is the firm that has been working with Suwanee planner Josh Campbell and other city officials on the changes. Among the proposals: -- Enhanced pedestrian crossings at Peachtree …

City actually diverted to Gwinnett system during changes.
The Suwanee water system will get new equipment and new treatment that officials hope will correct discoloration experienced by some residents, City Council members were told Thursday. James Miller, the city's director of public works, said Thursday that mechanical problems with pumps in both well houses prompted the new equipment. Also, the city has begun a phosphate treatment program because of some residents' complaints of discoloration in their drinking water. Several residents of the Stonecypher subdivision have complained of a brown color to their tap water, dating to when the homes were built in 2004-05. No health problems have been reported, but some residents say they have had clothes ruined during laundry. Suwanee actually …

Public Storage is a terrible company to expand in Suwanee. They are not ethical, and I hate that they can flourish while cheating citizens of Suwanee who use their storage units. I rented 3 storage units from McGinnis Ferry Self Storage over 2 years ago and had no problems. Since Public Storage took over, I have had one problem after another concerning my rents. Every time I went to the warehouse…   more ›
