Chairman says transportation projects are a priority for Gwinnett in 2013.
Transportation projects were plentiful on the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners' agenda Tuesday (February 5). And the commissioners approved several, with some price tags ranging into seven figures. Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash said that transportation is a priority for the commissioners in 2013, and that Transportation Director Kim Conroy had been given the signal to move ahead with some projects. Courtesy of the Gwinnett Transportation Department, here's the road closure situation for February 2-8, 2013. · Alcovy Road from Campbell Road to West Drowning Creek Road will require intermittent lane closure through March for roadway improvements associated with Sugarloaf Parkway extension, weather permitting. Any such closures will be between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm. · Camp Branch Road from Kilgore Road to Wallace Road will close on January 28 for approximately two months for culvert improvements. The detour route will be Camp Branch Road to Hamilton Mill Road to Wallace Road to Camp Branch Road and the reverse. Most everyone in Suwanee and Gwinnett County has to deal with often-contentious traffic on a daily basis. And the county government is making improvements in its traffic management system that may make that task easier. According to a county news release, the Board of Commissioners recently allocated $341,763 in 2009 SPLOST funds for an upgrade, which will expand use of the state NaviGator system. The upgrade, which includes added information available via live online streaming, is expected to be completed in mid- to late 2013, according to Gwinnett spokesperson Heather Sawyer. Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road still have more problem areas than any other streets.
Recent data from Suwanee Police show that the city's most troublesome intersections have a familiar look. For 2012 year to date, the city's five most dangerous intersections were: PIB at McGinnis Ferry regularly shows up on police "hot sheets" as being the one with the most accidents and traffic violations. Suwanee Police use the traffic data to deploy their patrol vehicles. -- What are your suggestions for traffic safety in Suwanee? Share your thoughts in the comments below. One simple change would make a drastic difference in these intersections. Change the traffic lights to two separate lights. One for drivers not turning, and the second light the kind with just the green or red turn arrows.
