Some legislators acknowledge the freebies can look bad, but they say the state's new ethics law will make it harder to mingle with constituents.
Georgia legislators who want to sit in the president's suite above the hedges at Sanford Stadium next year will have to pay their own way, thanks to ethics legislation signed by Gov. Nathan Deal last week. The law forbids elected officials from receiving gifts or event tickets exceeding $75. University System of Georgia lobbyists gave state and local lawmakers more than $14,000 in football tickets in 2012, the Athens Banner-Herald reports. The paper quotes state Sen. Bill Cowsert, whose district includes Athens, saying the football games have been a good way for him to mingle with his constitutents. “I think it’s really going to change things," Cowsert is quoted saying of the new ethics law. "I think it’s going to make it tougher for the …

The Bulldogs, with 12 wins, finished alongside Texas A&M in the ranking.
Georgia's 2012 football season, which almost resulted in a shot at the BCS title, has produced its highest final ranking in years. The Bulldogs finished tied for fifth nationally, with fellow SEC member Texas A&M, in the final Associated Press poll, which was released Tuesday (January 8). Of course, Alabama, which defeated Notre Dame 42-14 on Monday in the BCS title game, was ranked No. 1. The Fighting Irish fell to No. 4. -- Do you agree with Georgia's co-No. 5 finish? How do you think UGA will fare in 2013? Share your thoughts in the comments below. The Bulldogs, who defeated Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl on January 1, finished 12-2, tied for most wins in school history. The 1980 national championship team and the 2002 Sugar Bowl team…

Will the Bulldogs start 2013 with a win?
The Georgia-Nebraska Capital One Bowl will be televised on Tuesday, January 1, at 1 p.m. on ABC. The complete bowl TV schedule is here. ---- The Georgia Bulldogs arrived in Orlando on Wednesday (December 26) to begin prepping in earnest for their New Year's Day Capital One Bowl matchup against the Big Ten's Nebraska. Coming off a heartbreaking SEC championship loss in which a few yards made the difference between playing for the national title and being passed over for a BCS berth, the Dawgs are looking to close out the 2012 season on a triumphant note. Some analysts think that's likely. "With the way that the Bulldogs left Atlanta, they are looking for redemption and there is not much that the Cornhuskers can do to stop it from being …

If the Bulldogs beat Bama, they're likely headed to Miami to take on Notre Dame for the BCS title.
--- The SEC Championship game will be televised on CBS at 4 p.m., December 1. --- Well, here we are, on the brink of the SEC championship game, a game that many doubted the Georgia Bulldogs would reach this year, but which could propel them to the contest for the National Championship. The Bulldogs haven't won a national title since they beat Notre Dame in 1980, despite fielding one of the most consistently successful teams in the country. As Dan Wolken of USA Today put it, "There aren't many opportunities to put 30 years of frustration aside as a program, but Georgia is on the doorstep of one of them." To get in the door, the Bulldogs have to defeat No. 2 Alabama, no easy feat. Seth Emerson reports for the Ledger-Enquirer that the teams …

For the Bulldogs, the hype about a possible national championship has begun.
The Georgia Tech-Georgia game will be televised at noon Saturday on ESPN. --- Georgia Athletic Director Greg McGarity might have been prescient when he asserted earlier this season that Georgia Tech, and not Florida, is really the Bulldogs' biggest rival. Who would have predicted a month ago that so much would ride on this weekend's in-state matchup? Georgia survived the easier of its back-to-back triple-option challenges by defeating Georgia Southern last week. Now the Bulldogs, suddenly catapulted to No. 3 in the BCS standings, must withstand a visit from Georgia Tech before turning their attention to the SEC Championship game, likely against No. 2 Alabama. And then, maybe, the national title game? Not so fast, says Georgia head coach …

Looking at the final regular-season weekend of SEC action.
All eyes will be on Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Saturday for the annual Auburn-Alabama rivalry. This is always a fierce one, and this year it carries strong implications for the SEC title and BCS national championship picture. Alabama can clinch the SEC West title with a win. And no one is giving Auburn, winless in the SEC this year, much of a chance. (Game time: 3:30 p.m., CBS). Shades of 1972. That year, Alabama was heavily favored over Auburn when the teams met. But in one of the most memorable upsets in college football history, Auburn blocked two punts, returning them both for touchdowns in a 17-16 victory. The plays were strikingly similar: Auburn's Bill Newton broke through to block both punts, and Auburn DB David Langner picked them both …

Just when the post-season college football picture was looking so simple ... Texas A&M's 29-24 victory over No. 1 Alabama on Saturday in Tuscaloosa will have a pronounced effect on both the SEC and national college football scenes. However, one part of the SEC title game picture was cleared up Saturday. Georgia clinched the SEC East title with a 38-0 rout of Auburn. The Bulldogs will be in the SEC title game on Dec. 1 in Atlanta. -- How do you think the SEC and BCS situations will shake out? Tell us in the comments below. The Bulldogs' opponent remains to be seen. Alabama's loss Saturday means the Tide still must beat Auburn on Nov. 24 to punch their ticket to Atlanta. Also, the Bowl Championship Series rankings will be in for a shakeup. …

A victory Saturday night should send the Bulldogs to the SEC championship game.
The Georgia-Auburn game will be televised on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. -- Auburn's not very good this year. They're still looking for an SEC win, and Georgia might not be the best place to find it. The Bulldogs, while romping through some rough patches, are ranked No. 5 in the country and need only beat the Tigers to wrap up the SEC East Division and play for the league championship. Of course, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt isn't preparing his team for a cakewalk. "I told the guys Get your mind right, right now,"' Richt said in an Associated Press story earlier this week. "We know they're capable of knocking us off." The Dawgs will be bringing a depleted receiving corps to Auburn. Marlon Brown was reported out for the season earlier this week after …

The Bulldogs could coast to an SEC East title - if they can get past the undefeated Gators.
So, in their last two games, Georgia got trounced by South Carolina and barely squeaked by the unimpressive Kentucky Wildcats. And yet, Bulldogs faithful are still talking about a shot at the SEC championship. Why? Because the Bulldogs have only one loss, and if they beat Florida on Saturday, a relatively gentle schedule gives them an opportunity to cruise to the SEC East title. The schedule is so favorable, an AP reporter suggested that Georgia "might be the most fortunate team in the nation." It might be better to be lucky than good, but are the Bulldogs good enough to beat a Florida team that wiped the floor with South Carolina, the team that wiped the floor with Georgia? Well, we know that college football isn't a linear proposition, …

Is the season over for the Georgia Bulldogs? Or will a little adversity push them to great heights?
The Georgia Bulldogs have two weeks to lick their wounds after last week's loss to South Carolina, a game that was billed as a barn burner and turned out to be a tar-and-feathering. The Dawgs have a bye week this Saturday (Oct. 13) to reflect on what could have been, and look ahead to visiting a hapless Kentucky on Oct. 20. The now-No. 14 Bulldogs seem to be taking their humiliation in stride. "We've still got life. It's a long season. We've got more games to play," Malcolm Mitchell, a sophomore receiver, is quoted saying by the Macon Telegraph's Seth Emerson. "If we dwell on this game, we'll lose the next one, then lose the next one. We've gotta stay focused and keep pushing." Emerson reports that head coach Mark Richt is holding steady …
