Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama faced off for the second time on Tuesday. The candidates debated in a town meeting format including foreign and domestic policy. The debate was held at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, and was sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates. The moderator was CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley. If you haven’t yet registered to vote, get it off your to-do list now. Tuesday, Sept. 25, is National Voter Registration Day, and thousands of local, state and national organizations have mobilized to make sure millions of people don’t miss the chance to cast their vote in this year’s elections. Six million people didn’t vote in the 2008 elections because they either did not know how to register or because they missed the voter registration deadline. The voter registration deadline for Georgia is Oct. 9. The District 1 commissioner-elect plans to qualify for a portion of the current unexpired term.
Updated Aug. 2, 10:01 a.m. Jace Brooks, who has just been elected to the Gwinnett BOC District 1 term that begins in 2013, plans to get an early start in November. Brooks, a former Suwanee City Council member, said Wednesday that he plans to qualify for the Nov. 6 special election to fill out the current unexpired District 1 term that was left open when Shirley Lasseter resigned in May. He likely will face no opposition. Laurie McClain, Brooks' opponent in the July 31 GOP primary, said Wednesday that she does not intend to seek the unexpired term. After seeing the 1-percent sales tax known as TSPLOST fail in Tuesday's election, Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, who's also a board member of the Atlanta Regional Commission and the chairman of the Transportation Roundtable, was obviously unhappy. "I'm disappointed," said Johnson to Norcross Patch. "I think it was a great opportunity for the region that was missed." Laurie McClain, who was defeated in Tuesday's primary election for the Gwinnett BOC District 1 seat, congratulated her opponent Tuesday on his victory. "Yesterday was the culmination of three years of preparation and dedication to a cause that I thought was crucial to Gwinnett. Although we came up short, I am so proud of my friends, my supporters, and my volunteers for sticking by me through it all," McClain, a Suwanee accountant, said in a Facebook post. McClain got 45.9 percent of the votes cast Tuesday, to 54 percent for Jace Brooks, a former Suwanee City Council member. A total of 12,212 votes were cast in the race. The transportation sales tax known as TSPLOST went down to a solid defeat Tuesday (July 31) in the 10-county metro Atlanta region. However, varied reaction on social media indicates that the movement lives on. Untie Atlanta (@untieatlanta), one of the organizations backing the transportation sales tax, posted on Twitter, "The TSPLOST story hasn't ended. We look forward to working with you to solve our region's transportation issues." In voting Tuesday, the measure got a 62.5 percent "no" from metro Atlanta voters, who rejected the one percent sales tax that would have raised funds for transportation-related improvements.
