Just hours after a large shipment of weapons arrived at a Dacula gun store, burglars struck the shop and stole numerous handguns, tactical rifles and shotguns. According to business owner David Duncan, Big Gun Armory received two large deliveries Friday afternoon. Duncan said the 65 guns were immediately placed on display, since store inventory had been heavily depleted due to increased sales related to the election, the Connecticut school shootings and holiday shopping. Then, at 1:47 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, Duncan got a call from his alarm company -- the burglar alarm had been activated. Gwinnett County Police were also notified and arrived four minutes after getting the call, but it was too late. “They cleaned my place out,” Duncan …

There are a lot of ways to attack and defend, and Northeast Georgia villains and victims have tried most.
When some people are after you, resisting is a good idea. An Athens man smacked an intruder with a baseball bat after the guy kicked his door in, and the guy ran away with his door-kicking friends. A woman in Norcross beat back a man who sprayed her with pepper spray and then tried to choke her while she cleaned a hotel room. Her quick thinking helped get her to safety. But when the police are after you, resisting generally leads to more trouble. A Barrow County man whose dogs attacked officers trying to arrest him lost his dogs in that exchange. Running from the police might also lead you to end up in a tree with a deputized dog on your tail, which is what happened to a possible burglary suspect in Oconee County. It's better, if you're …

The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting deaths in Connecticut have everyone in Suwanee and Gwinnett on edge and wondering just how safe they - and their children - really are. The focus naturally turns to guns, and how to keep weapons from the hands of those who would kill the innocent and unarmed. And it has put those who sell guns in the spotlight, including those retailers in Gwinnett. Dick's Sporting Goods, which has over 500 stores in 44 states including Peachtree Corners and Buford (Mall of Georgia), sells rifles, shotguns and ammunition. Shortly after the Friday shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the company made an announcement that "out of respect for the victims and their families," it would remove all guns from sale and from …

Sounds like the public safety was compromised as a result of safety regulations for a store door, considering the type of store it was. Regulations should include 2 locks in any store - one with a twist latch and one double-keyed (and especially for stores selling weapons) and allowing the double-keyed one to be used when the store is closed for business. If the store is closed, anyone remaining …   more ›
