In order to ensure that anyone who has had too much to drink doesn’t hit the roads on New Year’s Eve, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has come up with a plan. GOHS has joined with safety partners across the state to create a list of contacts for free rides to help everyone get home safely – and in keeping with the technological age we’re in, an app has been created to make it just that easy. Across Georgia on New Year’s Eve, and Super Bowl Sunday, there will be a wide variety of taxi companies and designated driver services providing free rides home for people “in need of a sober driver.” The service, and corresponding app for it, is part of the GOHS program to eliminate drunk drivers on Georgia roads. The following are …

How to celebrate before midnight.
For several years, my husband and I tried our best to wake the little ones just a few minutes before midnight so that they could celebrate the New Year with us. Most of the time, we were met with resistance to getting up, crankiness if they managed to get up, and a horrible day after for little ones whose sleep was interrupted. So after a few frustrating New Year's celebrations, it was decided that kiddie celebrations would have to be before the stroke of midnight. Here are some ideas on how to ring in 2012 with your kids. - Celebrate "Noon Year's Eve." The countdown to 12 can be 12 pm instead of am. Have party hats, fun seltzer drinks, and count down to Happy Noon Year! - Celebrate another time zone's New Year. It's midnight somewhere…

More bargains are advertised, and add returns/exchanges to the mix.
Updated 8:38 a.m., Dec. 26, 2011 Black Friday and Cyber Monday are history. Who cares? Call it Clearance Monday. Now that Santa has come and gone, and that people are into Christmas leftovers, retailers can get back to making money. All the goodies that didn't get sold during the regular shopping season now will be featured at discounted prices. (Check the screenshot of the Walmart local ad that now appears online.) See something in a store or online at a lower price than what you paid earlier? A website called priceprotectr.com can help, and it works at several top retailers. So can an iPhone app called Savvy. And here's a website touting the best after-Christmas sales. Also, many people will line up to return or exchange the gifts that …

From religious to humorous, there are some classics. What are yours?
Christmas music has been with us for weeks and will soon be gone. So time for discussion. The Jury Of One, aka Suwanee Patch editor Steve Burns, has decided to list his 10 favorite Christmas songs. They don't have to be religious, just something that connotes the season -- weather, family, the spirit of humanity, etc. So here's is the list, with a couple of videos attached. You guessed it -- we want to know yours, too. Tell us in the comments. 10. "Mele Kalikimaka," Bing Crosby. A traditional voice gives a Hawaiian spin to Christmas. (Search YouTube if you're unfamiliar.) 9. "Blue Christmas," Elvis Presley. Any top 10 musical list needs to include one by the King, and this is one of his best known songs in general. 8. "Santa Claus Is …

For 364 days out of the year, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) spends its time tracking airplanes, missiles, space ships—anything flying near the United States and Canada. But on Christmas Eve, a team of volunteers spends the night tracking a very special pilot: Santa Claus. "We are the only organization that has the technology, the qualifications and the people to do it," NORAD said on its website. "NORAD tracks Santa, but only Santa knows his route, which means we cannot predict where and when he will arrive at your house." Santa usually starts at the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean and travels west, NORAD noticed, meaning he moves from the South Pacific to New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Africa and …
Don't have plans for a Christmas meal? Just don't feel like cooking? Here are some local places that will be open.

Waffle House is always open, as in 24-7 even on Christmas Day. Ask for Will if going there for lunch or dinner. 2. IHOP will be open on the holiday as well. Hours are 8 am to 8 pm. 3. Want to celebrate Christmas in "Christmas Story" style? Orient Garden is open from 3:30 to 10 pm. Fa-ra-ra-ra-ra! Wherever you enjoy Christmas Day, have a very merry one!
