Gwinnett Town Hall Meeting Comes to Suwanee

The next session by the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners will be Tuesday at George Pierce Park.

It'll be a homecoming of sorts for Jace Brooks on Tuesday night. Brooks, who is in his first full term as Gwinnett District 1 commissioner, will be part of a Gwinnett Town Hall meeting in Suwanee on Tuesday (April 30). The event, part of a series of town halls, will be from 6:15-8:30 p.m. at the George Pierce Park Community Center, on Buford Highway. The open house will be at the start of the program, with questions and comments beginning at 7 p.m. Brooks was a Suwanee City Council member from 2002-12, before leaving to run for commissioner. He actually was sworn in late in 2012 to fill the term vacated by Shirley Lasseter. District 1 includes Suwanee, Duluth and Sugar Hill. Already in 2013, Brooks has had an effect. Mitsubishi Electric Plants More Roots in Suwanee

Mitsubishi Electric is a global company with more than 110,000 employees worldwide, and it trades on Japan's Nikkei index. But if employees needed to get in touch with the boss Wednesday (April 17), they had to patch in to Suwanee. "We are so very pleased to join you in Suwanee," Kenichiro Yamanishi, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Electric, said at the grand opening of the company's new HVAC headquarters on Satellite Boulevard, near I-85, an unincorporated area. "We are making many key investments like this one, throughout North America." Brooks To Get Early Start on Gwinnett BOC

The District 1 commissioner-elect plans to qualify for a portion of the current unexpired term.

Updated Aug. 2, 10:01 a.m. Jace Brooks, who has just been elected to the Gwinnett BOC District 1 term that begins in 2013, plans to get an early start in November. Brooks, a former Suwanee City Council member, said Wednesday that he plans to qualify for the Nov. 6 special election to fill out the current unexpired District 1 term that was left open when Shirley Lasseter resigned in May. He likely will face no opposition. Laurie McClain, Brooks' opponent in the July 31 GOP primary, said Wednesday that she does not intend to seek the unexpired term. Brooks Takes Gwinnett BOC District 1 Race

The former Suwanee council member gets a majority over Suwanee accountant McClain.

It was a victory, though not a landslide. Jace Brooks outpolled Laurie McClain on Tuesday (July 31) in the GOP primary race to become the new District 1 member on the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners. With all 37 precincts in the district reporting, Brooks had 54 percent of the votes cast, to 45.9 percent for McClain. A total of 12,212 votes were cast in the race. Brooks will succeed Shirley Lasseter on the commission, and will take office next January. District 1 represents Suwanee, Duluth and Sugar Hill. No Democrat declared for the post for the November general election. It is not clear if or when Brooks will fill the unexpired portion of Lasseter's term. Brooks Has Lead in Gwinnett BOC District 1 Race

The former Suwanee council member has 53 percent, to McClain's 46.9 percent.

Updated 11:11 p.m. Former Suwanee City Council member Jace Brooks had the lead late Tuesday night over Suwanee accountant Laurie McClain for the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners District 1 seat. With 3,790 votes reported counted, Brooks had 53 percent of the votes, McClain 46.9 percent. This was with 9 of the 37 district precincts reporting. McClain, a Duluth resident, was a member of the citizens advisory committee for the Gwinnett County budget process. Brooks was a City Council member in Suwanee from 2002-12. He also held a fund-raising advantage of almost 3-1 on McClain, who never has held public elected office. Jace Brooks, candidate for the Gwinnett BOC District 1 race, announced Friday that top elected officials in Suwanee, Duluth and Sugar Hill have endorsed his candidacy. Brooks Widens Lead in Gwinnett BOC Fund-Raising

Even as they campaign for office and advance voting is under way, Jace Brooks and Laurie McClain continue to raise funds in their effort to be elected to the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners. The latest campaign reports filed in state records show that Brooks, a former Suwanee City Council member, has taken a fund-raising lead of almost 3-to-1 over McClain, a Suwanee accountant. Brooks' Gwinnett BOC Campaign in High Gear

It already has been noted that Jace Brooks, Suwanee City Council member, has been accepting campaign contributions for election to the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners. Those efforts continued last week with a fund-raising reception that was scheduled to include, among others, Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris and Suwanee Mayor Jimmy Burnette. The event was held at the Georgia Trail golf course in Duluth. Suwanee Council Member Kevin McComber has a financial interest in that course. Also among the attendees listed were Greg and Tammy Shumate, who are listed as donors to the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation through Brand Mortage Company. Another Challenger Emerges for Gwinnett District 1 Seat

Suwanee CPA McClain said Thursday that she will join the field for the seat currently held by Lasseter.

Another Suwanee figure intends to join the election field for the Gwinnett District 1 Commissioner seat in 2012. Laurie McClain, a CPA with an office in unincorporated Suwanee, said Thursday that she will run for the seat currently held by Shirley Lasseter of Duluth. Jace Brooks, a Suwanee City Council member, also has announced his intention to seek the District 1 seat. McClain said Thursday that she has been considering the move for about three years. She was a member of the citizens review panel for the Gwinnett commissioners' 2012 budget process. "I caught the bug," she said. "The more involved I get, the more interested I get.
