The opening kickoff for the Atlanta Steam's first game in Gwinnett had not even taken place, when the comment was made. And the fallout continued after the contest. A Suwanee Patch commenter said of the Legends Football League: This is, by far, the worst excuse for a sport I believe I have ever seen. Really? It's the equivalent to jello wrestling and wet t-shirt contests, but in a team environment. Another comment followed after the first game: What a joke. It must be free to attend. Gwinnett, women's pro football officially arrives in the area Saturday April 13). The Atlanta Steam has its home opener in the Gwinnett Arena (game time, 8 p.m.) when it plays the Omaha Heart. Both are first-year teams in the Legends Football League. The league was called the Lingerie Football League until a recent rebranding that included "performance wear" for uniforms. For the Steam, it also will be a chance for redemption. Atlanta lost its season opener 48-0 at Jacksonville in March. The debut of the women's Legends Football League in Gwinnett is less than two months away. Already, the Atlanta Steam is practicing -- and chafing under the prediction of an 0-4 season in 2013. The women's football league that plans to open play in April 2013 in Gwinnett has evolved further. It has completed its roster and named a head coach. The Legends Football League, which until recently was known as the Lingerie Football League, has announced the roster for the Atlanta Steam on its website. Also, former Arena Football League player Ray Norell is the head coach. The roster includes 20 players. The women-only football league that plans to debut in April in the Gwinnett Arena has a new name and new uniforms. The Lingerie Football League announced Wednesday (January 9) in Los Angeles that it now is calling itself the Legends Football League. And its uniforms will now be "performance wear," instead of the lingerie that characterized its previous years. "This is the next step in the maturation of our now global sport. That women-only football league that plans to play in Gwinnett in 2013 has announced a coming "re-branding" that likely will include changes to its name and uniforms. According to a news release, the Lingerie Football League will announce facets of the re-branding on Wednesday (January 9) in Los Angeles as it gears up for its fourth season in the U.S. "We have now reached a crossroad of gaining credibilty as a sport or continuing to be viewed as a gimmick," the press release said in part. "In the coming years we will establish this sport in Canada, US, Australia, Europe and Asia as the most known form of American football globally. That Lingerie Football League team that plans to play in Gwinnett in 2013? Just call it the Atlanta Steam. In a news release, LFL officials announced that "Atlanta Steam" was the most popular choice of almost 4,300 team name submissions. That was among the strongest responses for such an effort in an expansion market. It's an appropriate team name for the LFL, which is not shy about its marketing appeal. The planned Atlanta franchise of the Lingerie Football League, which has scheduled two games in Gwinnett in 2013, has announced an open tryout date in the Atlanta area in November. According to a league news release, the tryout will be on Saturday, Nov. 10 in Fairburn, which is in southeast Fulton County. The location will be Score Indoor, 1245 Oakley Industrial Boulevard, 30213. The session begins at 1 p.m. --- "We know that 99.9 percent of you guys have never touched a football ..." I have watched the LFL games on TV in the past and I am glad we have our own team. If you just sit and watch you would any other football game and not focus on what the girls are wearing, you would see that they have a lot of heart and passion for the game.
