NEWS NEARBY: Hobby Lobby 'Appreciation Day' Set for January 5

News from Patch sites in the area.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is encouraging supporters of Hobby Lobby, which has stores in Gwinnett, to shop at the store to "support the Christian owners' fight against the Obama administration's [Health and Human Services] mandate," according to ChristianPost.com. The "Appreciation Day" is set for Saturday, January 5. There are 500 Hobby Lobby stores in the U.S. This is the largest corporation to file suit against the mandate.  Huckabee encouraged a similar effort back in August for Chick-fil-A, when the restaurant chain, which incorporates biblical beliefs into its business plan, was mired in controversy over executive Dan Cathy's stance on same-sex marriage.  -- Will you show your support at Hobby Lobby on Saturday? Chick-fil-A Executive Denies 'Concessions'

Dan Cathy speaks on recent developments in the ongoing same-sex marriage controversy. Share your thoughts.

The Chick-fil-A controversy continues, with company President Dan Cathy speaking out on recent events that led some to believe that the company was backing off its stance on marriage. According to the Huffington Post, on Sept. 21, Cathy issued a statement on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s website denying these reports, claiming the company has made no "concessions" to gay marriage supporters. “There continues to be erroneous implications in the media that Chick-fil-A changed our practices and priorities in order to obtain permission for a new restaurant in Chicago. That is incorrect. Chick-fil-A made no such concessions, and we remain true to who we are and who we have been," Cathy's statement said. -- Do you support Chick-fil-A's …

Chick-fil-A Gets Appreciation in Suwanee

The restaurant chain has been embroiled in controversy recently.

Updated Aug. 4, 2012 Chick-fil-A usually never lacks for appreciation, and it got plenty in Suwanee on Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, Aug. 1. Several people who patronized one of the Suwanee locations of the restaurant chain Wednesday were aware of the controversy, and they indicated that the situation was a factor in their decision to come that day. Patty Smith Hall said that Chick-fil-A and its atmosphere was a reason that she moved back to the Suwanee area from Michigan in 2009. "It's the only place I can get sweet tea," she said. Did you make a special trip to Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1? Why or why not? Tell us in the comments below. Of course, she is aware of the same-sex marriage controversy that has surrounded Chick-fil-A recently, which …

Wikipedia is a site that can be edited on a whim without oversight. If you're comfortable with being lazy................ You used wikipedia as a buttress. Pathetic that you're dodging the isssue, a typical liberal trait. Spin it all you want, but it smacks of intellectual laziness and a lack of journalistic rigor. Though maybe I'm assigning too much to say that anything about you is indicative …   more ›

More Focus on Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1, Aug. 3

Political sides in the same-sex marriage controversy have issued "calls to action" at the restaurant chain's outlets.

Updated Aug. 2, 2012 This could be an interesting week for Chick-fil-A, the Atlanta-based restaurant chain that recently has become a political battleground. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has called for Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day on Wednesday, Aug. 1, and has set up a Facebook page to draw attention. And the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is backing a call for a National Same-Sex Kiss Day on Friday, Aug. 3, to be held at Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide. The controversy, of course, comes from a statement by Chick-fil-A executive Dan Cathy, who supports the view of marriage as between a man and a woman. Dan Cathy, son of company founder Truman Cathy, said the fast-food giant was “guilty as charged” of supporting “the …

SPEAK OUT: Chick-fil-A Gains, Loses Backers on Same Sex Marriage

Former presidential candidate Huckabee offers support, Muppets cut ties.

The recent controversy over the stance of Chick-fil-A on same-sex marriage has now drawn in Mike Huckabee, the former presidential candidate and Fox TV commentator. Huckabee, also an ordained Southern Baptist minister, has called for Aug. 1 to be Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, and he has set up a Facebook page for that purpose. "The goal is simple: Let's affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick Fil-A on Wednesday, August 1," read Huckabee's statement on the Facebook page.
