McGinnis Ferry Road is called a 'deathtrap.' Share your thoughts.
Public comment again is strong on traffic safety in Suwanee after a head-on vehicle collision last week claimed two lives. "That intersection has been a deathtrap and many of us have (complained)," Suwanee Patch commenter Laura Wade said recently after Jean Strickland of Suwanee and David Dowdy of Bogart were killed November 28 in a collision on McGinnis Ferry Road. The wreck happened at the intersection with Scales Road, between Buford Highway and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Similar citizen complaints have been voiced about safety along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, which regularly has several intersections on police safety "hot sheets." -- What do you think needs to be done to help traffic safety on Suwanee streets? Recent pedestrian death adds to the accident total in the area.
The recent death of a pedestrian on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Suwanee is a grim reminder that the stretch of road is one of the most hazardous in the city. According to police records for August 2011, the intersections of PIB/McGinnis Ferry Road and PIB/Moore Road were two of the five with the most collisions and injuries. McGinnis Ferry had eight accidents and three injuries; Moore Road had four accidents and three injuries. These intersections are very near each other. This continues a trend. In April 2011, PIB/McGinnis Ferry was the most dangerous. Last week's pedestrian death was at PIB/Suwanee Dam Road, not far from Moore Road. Suwanee Police Chief Mike Jones previously has said that the 55 mph speed limit is the chief factor …

Updated 10:08 a.m., July 15, 2011 A megachurch with strong Suwanee and Gwinnett ties likely plans a permanent home near Suwanee. Gwinnett Church lead pastor Jeff Henderson has told followers recently that he will announce "the latest details about our launch this Fall" in a webcast Tuesday. In a previous blog post, Henderson said, "When Gwinnett Church moves in to our future location, we will be next door to both North Gwinnett Middle and High Schools." North Gwinnett Middle School is on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard near Suwanee Dam Road, and North Gwinnett High is a short distance away on Level Creek Road. The church is an offshoot of Alpharetta-based North Point Ministries. It has held some services at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth …

I have been pushing for a reduction of speed limit to 45 on PIB at McGinnis Ferry, Moore Road and Sewanee-Dam Road. The limit on PIB starts out from I-285 at 55 mph on the limited access section, drops to 45 through Duluth, then jumps to 55. That was OK when there was limited development around McGinnis and beyond, but in the last 10 years that has changed. There is much more development in that …   more ›
