Bulldogs top Peachtree Ridge in a recent game at Coolray Field.
Note: Records in this story are as of April 15, 2012 North Gwinnett (10-3) kept pace with Mill Creek atop the Region 7-AAAAA standings Saturday with a 3-2 win over Peachtree Ridge (8-5) at Coolray Field. Alex Kimble singled to left field, scoring JD Dutka in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete a three-run frame that put the Bulldogs ahead 3-2. It was the Bulldogs' first lead of the game and all that starter Tucker Baca needed to complete the victory. Baca, just a sophomore, kept his record on the season perfect and moved to 5-0. His pitching line was seven innings pitched, allowing just two hits and two runs. He walked one batter while striking out six. Baca completed two innings in which he only threw six pitches each inning (fifth…

The top-seeded North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge boys teams survived semifinal play Friday and will square off at 6 p.m. Saturday for the Region 7-AAAAA tournament title. Also, the North Gwinnett girls, ranked No. 3 statewide, will take on Norcross for the girls title at 4:30 p.m. However, Norcross -- the defending state champion -- will have star player Diamond DeShields back for this game; she missed the last regular season game between the two with an injury. Both games will be at Meadowcreek High. The Bulldogs boys survived Mill Creek, 34-33, when Jalen Bracey's 3-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed out. In the other boys semifinal, Peachtree Ridge trailed by a point at halftime but took control in the third quarter. Benny Johnson, who…

Let the game plans begin. North Gwinnett's boys and girls basketball teams now know their opponents for Friday's Region 7-AAAAA semifinals at Meadowcreek. The North girls will take on Duluth, and the North boys will take on Mill Creek. Peachtree Ridge High's boys also made the semfinals and will take on Norcross. The Ridge boys advanced with a 43-39 win over Suwanee rival Collins Hill on Wednesday. Brandon Jack had 17 points, including 10 in the third quarter when the Lions turned around a close game. "We battled as a team and had some guys step up when it counted," said Peachtree Ridge head coach Keith Arrington. All semifinals teams should advance to state tournament action beginning next week. The boys and girls AAAAA finals will be at …

Last year, the Norcross boys and girls brought state titles back to Region 7-AAAAA. Looks like North Gwinnett has a chance to do the same this season. The Bulldogs boys and girls are both seeded No. 1 and ranked in the state Top 10 as the region tournament opens Tuesday at Peachtree Ridge High in Suwanee. The North girls, ranked No. 3 by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, are led by Lexie Brown (daughter of former NBA player Dee Brown) and Peyton Whitted. The North boys are ranked No. 6 by the AJC. Quarterfinals will continue Wednesday at Peachtree Ridge, with the semifinals and finals at Meadowcreek High on Friday and Saturday. State tournament action begins next week and concludes (girls and boys) at the Gwinnett Arena in Duluth on March …

Activity begins at Bulldogs' home stadium long before Friday's victory over Peachtree Ridge.
If there are marbles anywhere in Suwanee, this one was for all of them. Long before North Gwinnett defeated Peachtree Ridge on Friday in the regular season finale, Tom Robinson Memorial Stadium was whirling with activity. Coldplay and country music played in the press box. The Peachtree Ridge High band played Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." "Mr. York, do you copy," Chris Culpepper of the North Gwinnett School Cluster said into his handheld radio. He was directing logistics, which included giving directions to the Peachtree Ridge football team bus driver outside the stadium. "When the cheerleaders bus arrives, give me a yell on the radio," Culpepper said. The smell of hot dogs and burgers was prominent, too. Belinda Fortenberry, by day a worker …

Jordan Parker scored three touchdowns to lead Collins Hill to a 51-0 playoff tuneup victory over visiting Meadowcreek Friday night. The Eagles finished the regular season 5-5, but their 4-3 record in Region 7-AAAAA was good enough for the region's fourth playoff seed. They will play at nationally ranked Grayson (10-0) next week in the first round of the playoffs. The Rams are the Region 8-AAAAA champions. Parker scored two of his touchdowns in the first half as Collins Hill built a 22-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Brett Sheehan scored on two runs, and Tyler Henderson and R.J. Burnette also scored TDs. The Eagles score two two-point conversions in the game. Meadowcreek (0-10) drove to the Collins Hill 1 on one occasion in the first half, but…

Peachtree Ridge had a sputtering offense in the first half, but it woke up in time for the Lions to take a 35-20 victory over Mill Creek on Friday in Hoschton, according to news reports. Trailing 7-0 early, the Lions got a scoring pass of 37 yards from Billy Best to Joe Horn with 2:37 to play in the first half. Then Lions safety Alex Gray stripped Mill Creek's John Russ of the ball near midfield and ran 55 yards for a TD and a 14-7 halftime lead. Horn and Ahmad Harris added scoring plays in the third quarter as the Lions took a 28-7 lead. After Mill Creek rallied to within 28-20, QB Best ran 1 yard for a score with 17 seconds left for the final margin. Ridge is now 8-1, 6-0 in 7-AAAAA. The season likely won't end for Suwanee high school football teams on Nov. 4, and it's possible that all three teams could be competing in the state AAAAA playoffs. With two weeks left in the regular season, North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge have all but clinched playoff berths, and Collins Hill still has a shot. Looking at the GHSA playoff brackets, four teams from each of the state's eight AAAAA regions will make the postseason. North and Ridge will meet on Nov. 4 at North, with the region title on the line. Collins Hill and Norcross each have two losses in the region, but both have lost to both North and Ridge. This week's Collins Hill-Norcross game therefore takes on strong importance. The winner could become the No. 3 team from 7-…

North Gwinnett, Collins Hill also are in action Friday as Region 7-AAAAA play enters the stretch run.
Peachtree Ridge can all but clinch a playoff spot Friday when rival Duluth comes to Suwanee. It is the Lions' final home game of 2011. A victory would give the Lions a 5-0 region record with two games to play. The Wildcats still are the only team that has an outside shot at a Region 7-AAAAA playoff spot. With a 2-2 region record, they have three games remaining, including facing co-leaders Peachtree Ridge and North Gwinnett. The Peachtree Ridge-Duluth clash takes on added meaning because of the controversial redistricting by Gwinnett schools that took effect this school year. Hundreds of students in the Peachtree Ridge Cluster were forced to attend schools in the Duluth Cluster because of overcrowding. The Lions are ranked in the statewide…
