ReplyI love that precious moment when your little guy offered to help zip up his coat! Beautiful! I also resolve to pause every day to count blessings and create lasting memories of precious moments with family.

ReplyI like what patchadam said about the move towards reading across all disciplines. The only problem is that content area/subject-specific teachers "DON'T TEACH READING" and aren't interested or trained in how to help students delve deeply into texts, or even how to help a struggling reader.
In addition, those wonderful pieces of literature not only ignite the imagination and grapple with serious themes, they also provide common points of reference in discussions about larger issues. What will happen to the common discourse when all we can reference to make grand points are technical manuals and vocational materials?

ReplyA fake cat that looked like a real cat sleeping. I was so sad it wasn't a real kitty that I threw it away. The same relative gave me a thigh master that stayed in a drawer because I just couldn't regift it and make some other woman feel bad about her body! Btw ... Same relative gave both gifts!

ReplyLove the "tooth fairy-esque" way you got those autographs. That saved so many long waits in long lines to get character autographs! Awesome.

ReplyIf the little ones are having trouble going to bed on Christmas Eve, just send one parent or helper outside with some jingle bells to rattle and ring. The "inside" parent then says it's Santa and reindeer flying overhead and they won't stop at their house until every child is in bed to stay for the whole night! Works like a charm. BTW, great ideas. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyI'm thankful that we learn how to "let go" of our kids a little at a time and not all at once. You know, how after they learn to take their first faltering steps they are suddenly running all over the house and before you know it, out the door to school, etc., etc. Children (and grandchildren) teach life lessons just by being who they are!
Great article, BTW. -

ReplyI had my own "aha" moment that I needed to spend more time with my kids instead of with pressing distractions while I was working on my graduate degree. It was so easy to just turn off from my family responsibilities and joys by working constantly on course requirements or on a dissertation. Until one morning I realized precious years were passing by too quickly with my kiddos. So I made an executive decision to only focus on the degree after the children were in bed and my husband and I had spent time together, too. All of these years later I've never regretted that decision. I saw every soccer match, every dance recital, and even every weird weekend where we sought out something cultural and "free" to do because we were on a poor grad student budget! Leigh, you will never regret spending less time sitting in front of your computer and more time with your children! Good choice!

As our nation mourns another terrorist attack and the death of innocent people, I am comforted that so many, like our Athens runners, were spared injury. Our prayers are for the victims, survivors, and the law enforcement agencies who will track down the perpetrators.
