Suwanee Businessman Buys Berlin Wall Piece at Auction

Stanjevich, an immigrant from Europe, owns Friends Suwanee Grill.

Ray Stanjevich has made his mark in Suwanee in a relatively short time -- twice.

Stanjevich reportedly bought the Berlin Wall piece, which has been displayed in front of City Hall, at auction Saturday (May 25).

Media reports say that Stanjevich paid $24,000 for the 8,000-pound, 12-foot slab of concrete.

"I'm from a communist country, so it's something that represents a past to me that I don't think is a good past," said Stanjevich, who hails from Serbia.

Stanjevich told CBS Atlanta that he hopes to keep the piece in Suwanee, where he opened Friends Suwanee Grill in April. Stanjevich also owns Friends restaurants in Dacula and Dawsonville.

The Berlin Wall artifact was auctioned to provide some restitution for victims of a Ponzi scheme.
