A man drowned Sunday afternoon (June 23) at Lake Lanier, according to authorities.

According to the Gainesville Times, the man was on a float, but came off the float and went down, a Department of Natural Resources official said. The incident happened in the Athens Park Road area of Forsyth County.

The man “was just out with friends, swimming and enjoying the day,” DNR official Mike Burgamy said. “It doesn’t appear that foul play was involved.”

Several people were on the float with the victim, Burgamy said.

Forsyth County deputies said the cove where the man was located is about 40 feet deep in some locations. The man was on a float that measured 8 feet by 10 feet.

It's the second drowning of the summer at the lake. Earlier in June, a Suwanee woman was a drowning victim.
