Suwanee-North Gwinnett High Annexation Proposal Advances
The matter appears headed for the Georgia General Assembly.
The possibility that the City of Suwanee will annex North Gwinnett High School could become a matter for the Georgia General Assembly.
State Rep. Brooks Coleman, whose district includes Suwanee, confirms that he has discussed the idea with officials from the city and Gwinnett County Public Schools. And no opposition is surfacing.
The move first surfaced in late 2012, and was suggested by the school council and the PTA in a letter to Suwanee officials, according to then-Principal Ed Shaddix.
The principal noted that the school has used city facilities for various functions, and that the school also contracts with Suwanee Police for security at football games.

The matter would require state legislative approval because the school property is contiguous with other unincorporated properties, and is not an "island" property, according to Coleman.
Coleman added that Alvin Wilbanks, superintendent of the Gwinnett school system, is not opposed to the annexation idea.
Suwanee City Council members are scheduled to get another briefing on the matter Thursday (Jan. 16).
