Suwanee Voting Ends Tuesday

Patch will have updates on races for mayor, City Council and Sunday alcohol sales.

There's one day left for Suwanee voters to cast ballots -- Tuesday -- and most of them have yet to do so.

When early/absentee voting ended Friday, 266 voters had cast ballots at City Hall. That's about 2.7 percent of the more than 9,700 registered voters on the rolls.

Traditional political wisdom says that low voter turnout favors underdogs or opponents of popular issues. No official polling exists, but in the Suwanee mayoral race, City Councilman and Suwanee native Jimmy Burnette definitely would have more name recognition and political experience than Dan Pittman, the other candidate.

Burnette also has the support of outgoing Mayor Dave Williams and Gwinnett BOC Chairman Charlotte Nash, according to Facebook postings. "Git 'er done, Jimmy!," Nash wrote on Burnette's personal Facebook site.

Also, there has not been a lot of known vocal opposition to the referendum on Sunday alcohol sales, which would allow sales by retailers for off-premises consumption. Smaller stores might not favor the passage, because they would be forced to stay open to compete with larger retailers, such as grocery chains who would have more staffing resources.

All Suwanee voting Tuesday will be done at City Hall, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Results will be announced that evening.

On the county level, the E-SPLOST sales-tax vote affects schools throughout Gwinnett. The measure would extend a one-cent sales tax and provide for construction of various projects in Suwanee and elsewhere. That election is being supervised by Gwinnett County, with voting done at county precincts.

Suwanee Patch will have ongoing coverage Tuesday, including a live blog that will allow for viewer participation and real-time reporting.
