An organization founded over the tragedy of slain hiker Meredith Emerson of Buford has made a donation to a Suwanee trail.

Right To Hike Inc. Vice President Brett Seyler was recognized by Mayor Dave Williams at the recent City Council meeting for the organization's donation of a solar-powered cell phone that will be placed on the Suwanee Creek Greenway trail.

Emerson was abducted and killed in January 2008 in north Georgia.

"Not every emergency is an abduction," Seyler, an acquaintance of Emerson's, told the audience in City Council chambers. "It's our way of giving back to the community."

The phone is intended as a safety measure for walkers, joggers and cyclists. The organization also has donated a phone to the Heritage Center.

Also, Suwanee Police Capt. Cass Mooney took the opportunity to remind people about the department's park ambassador program. Already more than 50 people have volunteered to be the police's "eyes and ears" throughout the city's signature parks program.
