Stormy Weather Monday in Suwanee Area

Accident jams I-85; lightning is common.

It was a stormy Monday for Suwanee-area commuters. Rain and thunderstorms were raging in the pre-dawn hours, causing all sorts of problems.

At one point, two lanes of westbound Highway 78 were blocked due to standing water, per news reports. And a crash was reported at I-85 southbound at Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Gwinnett County, causing traffic backups all the way to SR 316 in Lawrenceville.

Georgia Power reported Monday that 1,500 people in metro Atlanta were without power Monday as of 8:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather report that shows that the showers and thunderstorms will continue throughout the morning and into early Monday afternoon. A flood warning has has been issued for Big Creek near Alpharetta.

This follows a weekend of storm-related damage in Gwinnett. On Saturday, emergency workers responded to four incidents, including downed trees and fires caused by lightning strikes.
