Suwanee Newborn Is Gwinnett's First in 2014

The infant does not have a name yet, but it has a distinction.

A baby girl born to Abdul Diallo and Meme Balde of Suwanee on Wednesday morning was the first newborn in Gwinnett County in 2014, according to Gwinnett Medical Center (GMC) officials.

It's the third child and second daughter for the couple, both of whom hail from the Republic of Guinea in Africa, according to GMC spokesperson Beth Okun. Time of birth was 1:54 a.m. on Jan. 1, and the new infant weighed in at 8 pounds, 12 ounces.

The child's name will be announced next week at a naming ceremony in the parents' home country, Okun said. That ceremony will be led by the baby's grandparents. Following that tradition, the name will be shared with friends and family state-side, the father said.

However, the father will actually select the name of the newborn. With each child, one of the parents selects the name, then the next child's name is chosen by the other parent -- so dad picks one and mom picks the next, Okun said.

The father works for Chase Bank, and the mother is a bookkeeper at Kroger, according to Okun.
