Suwanee Snowstorm 2011: One Year Later

On Jan. 9, 2011, snow began falling and ice began forming on roads. The city and surrounding area were all but paralyzed for a week.

Do you remember? How can you forget?

The forecasts were dire, and right on target. In the evening of Jan. 9, 2011, snow began falling heavily in and around Suwanee, and ice began forming on roadways.

Beginning Monday, the area was practically shut down. Schools and most businesses were closed, and emergency personnel were on alert. Even routine commutes were practically impossible, forcing many residents to walk to stores.

Schools would remain closed the entire week, forcing graduation ceremonies into Memorial Day weekend.
