5. Today in History: On this date in 1967, Georgia-born soul singer Otis Redding died in a plane crash in Madison, Wis. Though just 27, he already had gained fame with such singles as "Try A Little Tenderness" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long." Left unfinished was a whistled verse in a studio recording. The song was then released in that form, and "Dock Of The Bay" went on to become a hit.
