Today in History: On this date in 1978, Ohio State fired longtime football coach Woody Hayes, one day after Hayes punched Clemson defender Charlie Bauman in the closing minutes of the teams' Gator Bowl game. Hayes began coaching the Buckeyes in 1951 and won 238 games and four national titles in that span. He would never coach again after being fired by OSU, and he died in 1987. (Source: history.com)
