5. Today in History: On this date in 1974, Atlanta Constitution editor Reg Murphy was kidnapped outside his home in the city. William Williams, 33, phoned in ransom demands to the newspaper, which eventually paid a $700,000 ransom. Within hours, Williams and his wife Betty were caught in their home outside the city with the ransom money. Eventually, Williams was convicted of kidnapping and extortion and served nine years in prison. This episode came shortly after newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst was kidnapped by terrorists in California. (Source: history.com.)
