5. Today in History: On this date in 1991, U.S.-led forces began Operation Desert Storm, also known as the Gulf War. At 4:30 p.m. EST, aircraft from Saudi Arabia and aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf launched an offensive that lasted about six weeks. The only response from Iraq, which had occupied Kuwait, was to launch SCUD missile attacks against Saudi Arabia and Israel. A cease-fire was declared Feb. 28. (Source: history.com.)
