5. Today in History: On this date in 1986, the space shuttle Challenger lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on an ill-fated mission. Some 70 seconds after liftoff, the shuttle exploded in a plume of flame and smoke. All of the seven crew members died, including Christa McAuliffe, a high school teacher from New Hampshire who was the first ordinary civilian to travel into space. (Source: history.com.)
