Shutdown over accident forced traffic to be diverted to I-985.

Updated 6:40 a.m., July 12, 2011

I-85 northbound near Suwanee was reopened Tuesday morning after a traffic accident that ensnared several vehicles in cable wire near Mile Marker 121 (the Hamilton Mill exit).

The shutdown had forced Gwinnett Police officials to divert northbound traffic to I-985. However, a WSB-TV helicopter video showed traffic still to be heavy in the area as of 6:40 a.m.

Gwinnett Police officials said in a news release that the cable wire is part of a large section of the cable guard-rail system that runs along the interstate median.

Officers believe the guard rail was damaged by a tractor-trailer that left the scene after hitting it. The damage to the guard rail left a large section of it in the roadway that several motorists were unable to avoid.
