Suwanee Police Holding Prescription Drug 'Take Back' Event on Saturday

The event, in conjunction with the federal DEA, is designed to prevent prescription drug abuse.

The again will participate in the national "Take Back" program on Saturday. No questions asked, the department will accept expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for safe disposal.

This initiative addresses a public safety and public health issue, according to news releases. More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

Nationally, nearly 4,000 state and local law enforcement agencies have participated in these events, collecting more than 309 tons of pills.
