UPDATE: Suwanee SWAT Suspect Dies

Suspect shot himself Monday after incident in Auburn.

The man who shot himself during a SWAT standoff Monday in Suwanee has died, according to media reports.

Shuad Zaid Omar, 29, was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville on Monday afternoon after a standoff with police on Scales Road, where he has family, police said. The suspect had fled to Suwanee after he allegedly was involved in a double shooting in Auburn.

Auburn police said Wednesday that Omar has died.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, one of the two women Omar shot in an apparent domestic dispute at an Auburn apartment died after being transported to Gwinnett Medical Center. That woman has been identified as Betty Marie Maddox, 35.

The other Auburn victim, 32-year-old Monica Long, is in stable condition at a local hospital, Auburn police said.

Suwanee Police spokesperson Capt. Clyde Byers said Monday that the agency received a call from Barrow County after the double shooting in Auburn earlier Monday. One person was killed in that shooting.

"En route to the address we got word that the suspect was in the front yard with a hand gun to his head and threatening suicide," Byers said via email. "He eventually did pull the trigger and was transported to GMC in Lawrenceville and is still alive acording to the hospital."
