Another Feat for Maynard

The Suwanee City Council recognizes the Collins Hill High grad for reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Kyle Maynard's mantra is "no excuses." And his family didn't gived him any, even while Maynard was climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Maynard's mother recalled Tuesday that during Maynard's climb, his father remarked, "I hope it's freezing up there, or he'll want to climb Everest."

The event was at Suwanee City Hall, where the mayor and City Council proclaimed Feb. 29 as Kyle Maynard Day in the city. This was in honor of Maynard, a congenital quadriplegic, scaling the dormant volcano last month. .

"Don't lose sight of what impact you are having," Maynard told council members at the ceremony. (See the attached video.)

Also at Tuesday's meeting:

  • in Old Town prompted the city to redo its lease with Norfolk Southern Railway, which uses the nearby tracks. The purpose will be to eventually add about 70 parking spaces near the building, to handle the extra traffic. The Deming Group of Norcross plans to develop the building for retail and office use. The red caboose that is used in Christmas ceremonies currently sits on this leased property.
  • The council approved the alcoholic beverage license for Twisted Taco, which plans to open soon in the former Chili's building on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.
