Challenger Emerges in House District 97 Race

The district includes Suwanee. Will the incumbent run again?

It's an election year for many statewide offices in 2014, and the District 97 race for Georgia House of Representatives is one of them.

Longtime legislator Brooks Coleman is the incumbent for the district that includes Suwanee. However, another Duluth resident has announced plans to seek the seat.

Coleman said recently that he plans to seek re-election. He said he has "too much I want to accomplish."

However, Duluth resident Dahlys Hamilton has announced plans to seek the post, which represents Duluth, Suwanee, Sugar Hill and Buford.

On her Facebook page, Hamilton says she's a Republican, pro-life, and an advocate of smaller government. Her website notes: "Dahlys was born a full-fledged American citizen at Cristobal Colon Hospital, a military hospital located in the Panama Canal Zone." (Her husband is retired from military service.)

However, some things about the 2014 elections are still undetermined -- like qualifying dates and primary election date. Gwinnett County spokesperson Joe Sorenson noted this week that no dates have been posted to the county website. Those dates still have to be determined by the Georgia Legislature, which may or may not follow the federal schedule.
