Duluth Backs Proposed Gwinnett SPLOST

Duluth also supports renewing the countywide sales tax.

Duluth has become the latest Gwinnett city to opt in to a proposed 2014 Gwinnett SPLOST.

In a called meeting Monday (July 22), Duluth's City Council voted to authorize the mayor to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the county to receive its share of the tax known as the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

Suwanee's City Council made a similar move earlier in July. Any city that does not vote to be included in a new SPLOST program would not receive any of the funds.

At a joint city-county meeting on SPLOST in June, Gwinnett officials estimated that a new three-year tax could generate up to $498 million.

The current Gwinnett SPLOST expires in March 2014. County leaders are expected soon to issue a call for a public vote on whether to renew the 1 cent per dollar sales tax.

County leaders said in June that they want to use 70-75 percent of new SPLOST proceeds for transportation projects.
