Gwinnett Again To Provide 2013 Millage Rate Info

Commissioners are holding another special meeting Tuesday on the matter.

Gwinnett County residents soon can know more about the key rate that affects property taxes.

The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners is holding another special meeting for Tuesday, July 2, "for the purpose of providing information regarding Gwinnett County's 2013 millage rates." The meeting, which is open to the public, will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center (GJAC) in Lawrenceville.

When the fiscal year 2013 budget was passed in January, county officials said then that the millage rate would be set in summer, after appeals and assessments were completed.

The millage rate situation this year was affected by the Service Delivery Stratgegy (SDS) agreement between the county and the cities in 2012. That agreement mandated the establishment of service districts.

A millage rate will be associated with each of the new service districts; rates will depend on a property’s location, which determines what services are provided by the county, according to the county website.

The estimated situation is this:

  • the rate for residents who live in unincorporated Gwinnett will increase by less than 1 mill;
  • residents in cities that operate a police department will experience a more than 1 mill decrease;
  • residents of cities that do not operate a police department should see an increase of less than 0.5 mill;
An earlier meeting on the subject was held on June 25. Those minutes indicated that a millage rate of 13.75 is proposed. That would be an increase of 0.73.

A summary of the June 25 meeting is here. Another such meeting will be held on July 9 at GJAC.
