UPDATE: Gingrich 2nd in Gwinnett GOP Straw Poll; Paul Wins

In Suwanee, Gingrich calls Georgia crucial to his election hopes.

Updated Feb. 19, 2012

Calling President Obama the "most dangerous president in modern American history," Newt Gingrich made bold statements on the current administration and his presidential plans in a speech Saturday in Suwanee. The talk followed an earlier Gingrich rally Saturday in Forsyth County.

The former U.S. House speaker was introduced to the crowd of about 400 people at Collins Hill High by Atlanta-based businessman Herman Cain, who ended his presidential campaign in December and recently threw his support behind Gingrich.

Attacking Obama on several fronts, Gingrich said the president "refuses to tell the truth about people who want to hurt us." He said Obama's approach to national defense "is the most destructive unilateral disarmament I've ever seen."

Gingrich's speech followed a meeting of the Gwinnett County Republican Party elsewhere at the school. At that meeting, Ron Paul finished ahead of Gingrich in a straw poll.

Paul collected 115 votes to Gingrich's 73. Finishing third was former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum with 60 votes. Mitt Romney, currently the overall delegate leader among GOP candidates, got 25 votes.

State Rep. Buzz Brockway was among those wearing a Santorum sticker at the GOP meeting. Brockway said, "I don't dislike (Gingrich). ... At this point, the race is wide open, so I'm going to vote for the candidate with the best chance to win."

U.S. Rep Rob Woodall, who represents Suwanee and parts of Gwinnett in Congress, attended Saturday's GOP meeting. He has not decided on who to support, noting that his backing hinges on which candidate supports the Fair Tax.

Gingrich talked of the importance of the Georgia primary on March 6 (Super Tuesday), when the state's 73 delegates will be up for grabs. After the speech, he called his former home state a "springboard" for possible success in such states as Texas and California.

"I need your help," Gingrich told the crowd, which twice gave him a standing ovation.

Also, if it goes to a brokered convention ALL of the delegates will be unbound and can vote how they please. If the Dr Paul momentum continues to increase (see his Washington State rallys,,, like a rock star) he could actually do very well in all states. If we keep voting for more of the same that we have always been getting, we will always keep getting more of the same.

This is breaking news? This worthy of its own e-mail?

It's pretty funny that our President has used so many Republican ideas during his tenure. But the Repubs forget all their past ideas. Funny their God is a guy who had Alzheimers during his presidency according to his son. Seems they are taking after Sir God Reagan. When you have your main money man be a sleazy casino owner who bilks money from the addicted gambling public the question of who is dangerous seems to point right back to you doughboy.

I agree! You won't hear this one at a GOP debate.......

@Jonathan... That's where the "misleading" part comes in. As you said but the article did not, they are "estimates". If you read the methodology listed at the WSJ and the NYT and compare that to how delegates are actually selected (which differs significantly from state to state), it is very misleading. For instance, look at CNN estimates: http://www.cnn.com/election/2012/primaries.html But any journalist knows that, as with 2004 and 2008, the most accurate delegate estimates -- because they're based on the actual rules of each state's contest -- can be found at thegreenpapers.com -- http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P12/ Finally, when you read the headline (probably the editor's choice) and the content of the article, it's easy to see why readers would consider the article misleading. The winner of the poll is barely mentioned and, Newt, the guy that has no chance of getting the nomination without a brokered convention (because he is not even on the ballot in his home state) is the focal point of this article. Because a Ron Paul headline would definitely get more hits (that's what Patch wants, right?), you can't blame readers for assuming the reason the article and headline were written in they way the were.

Ron Paul is the only real conservative candidate. Santorum is on the extreme right and partially conservative, Gingrich is all over the map, Romney is nowhere and everywhere. He wants the moon just like a spoiled rich kid would. www.sci-burr.com

"Newt is a disgrace and so fat and ugly. He will never get the nomination, Americans are not that stupid."? How dare you talk about my lady killer?

The truth is, the reason Republicans are so undecided at this point, we don't really care who our nominee turns out to be. We will march to the polls and vote for any one of them. They all have their baggage, but the least one among them is still head and shoulders far better than what is in our oval office at the moment. For this very reason, I have stopped even following this run-up to the primary. I have already made up my mind. Anyone but obama!
MR U.S.A February 20, 2012 at 06:56 AM

Well said, KC Ted. Many folks on this blog probably cannot understand many of the critical ideas you put forth. The police state will swallow us. But hey, I got my free contraception and spring training just started.

That flying monkey would be Nancy Pelosi and her goons, right? After all, she and Newt tried to warn us about climate change. They are buddies.

Steve F Brown February 20, 2012 at 05:17 PM
The reason it doesn't matter how much oil we produce domestically is because it is all sold on the world market. OPEC sets the price of oil not the president. Before you channel your hatred for our president it would be nice if you understood global economics. If you think a different president would change this you are dreaming. If you want to blame someone blame the futures oil traders, they are the main reason for the price increases. Do some research before you spew your uninformed crap.
MR U.S.A February 20, 2012 at 05:21 PM
gas on the way up and electric cars are in only we don't want them as they will be forced on us because we cant afford to pay the high prices at the pump and truth be told these cars wont be cheap also we are not ready 4 electric at this time ....how much money will Obama make with this scam from GM how much longer will we stand by and let this man get away with his lie's .............we are not all fools like he thinks .........stand up 4 what is right and put an end to all this corruption that is going on in the white house starting with Obama
MR U.S.A February 20, 2012 at 05:40 PM
u are out of touch if anything Newt will shake up the white house and of course clean up Obama's mess im sure that is what people like u don't want you are still waiting 4 the lies about change that Obama promised well we all see just what he meant about change yes change 4 the worse is more like it he has accomplished that all by him self .......nothing but lie's and corruption is what this president is all about he is not a good leader he is not a good president he will take us down a path of destruction and only than people like u will realize what a mistake u have made to believe in a man with bad intentions
Steve F Brown February 20, 2012 at 05:52 PM
Hey Mr. Eistein there would be no GM if your party had their way. Our president is not making money from GM. I would assess that the scammer is you. The lies you put forth are fairly typical. BTW Newt is the most hated politician in the USA, according to various polls. he won't be cleaning anything up. Our president is very busy cleaning up the huge mess left by the last administration.
MR U.S.A February 20, 2012 at 05:54 PM
do u have any other news u want to share about Obama ....how about everything else that he has done how about our tax dollars he has spent with his lobbyist friends how about his Obama care how about all the dirty deals he has made maybe u like being controlled by government millions of Americans want government out of our lives he has put this country at a tipping point and he needs to get lost
Jesse Callihan February 20, 2012 at 06:14 PM
Ron Paul is the extreme opposite of Obama and we don't need that in the White House! Romney says what he thinks everyone wants to hear just like Obama did when he ran. Santorum is good but lacks the experience. Gingrich has a lot of baggage but he is the only one that can go head to head with Obama in debates and sway people to vote Republican. Just look after the debates and you will see that Gingrich has just about won them all and now nobody wants to debate with him. Why is that? We don't need another experiment in the White House with non-qualified Presidential Candidate. Are we prepared to put a timid President in the White House that wants to bring all our troops home from around the world which leaves us who travel around the world vulnerable. Wake up Georgians, the only real candidate that has bold ideas that will change all the wrongs that this administration has done is Newt Gingrich!!!!
MR U.S.A February 20, 2012 at 06:18 PM
Well said this makes them happy keep the goodies coming u will always have their vote they want everything 4 nothing at the cost of taking this country broke they will find out what those hand outs mean very soon we will all suffer because we have die hard Obama fans that don't care enough about the outcome and where it will lead us WE WILL PAY A BIG PRICE AND IT WILL NOT BE 4 NOTHING IT WILL BE THAT PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY ARE BRAIN WASHED INTO THINKING GOVERNMENT WILL BE A CURE ALL 4 THEIR NEEDS OBAMA PLAN IS WORKING ...HOW SICK
Charles L Claitty February 20, 2012 at 06:39 PM
We love you, Newt! You are helping guarantee a second term for Barack Obama. Are any of these four stooges candidate republicans going to talk about how they plan to solve problems or do they think just bashing the first black president will guarantee a win? Sounds like a real good way to lose the election.Look what Bush and Cheney did for this economy for two terms Their way of belief for this country is to Kill,Steal and destroy. LOL!!!! OBAMA 2012.

Just another intelligent American proudly procaiming my support for Ron Paul and the message of Liberty in 2012!

Ron Paul also won the DeKalb Straw Poll with 105 votes to 25 (Newt and Romney) and 13 (Santorum)

Jesse Callihan March 01, 2012 at 06:03 PM
That success belongs to our military and our intelligence people. Obama had no choice in the decision. He didn't want to be like Clinton who passed on the opportunity to take out Bin Laden. I think he also agreed because of politics and not because it was the right thing to do.
