Suwanee Historic District: What Are Boundaries?

Old Town Suwanee is on the map, in a big way. And so are most of its signature attractions.

It was announced this week that a 67-acre portion of Old Town has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, which is administered by the National Park Service. The inclusion ends a process that was begun by Suwanee officials in 2012.

And the map that was used in the application process (which was spearheaded by state officials) confirms that many of Old Town's best-known sites are in the district. (See the attached PDF document.)

These sites would be Everett's Music Barn on Stonecypher Road, Suwanee First United Methodist Church, and of course, Pierce's Corner on Main Street.

Aside from the national recognition, the historic district status opens up the possibility of federal tax credits for owners of income-producing properties in the district.

It's unclear how this might affect the Music Barn, which is located on a site that houses other buildings, or the church, which is more than 100 years old.

But it definitely would be in play for owners of residential properties in the district who rent out a portion of their properties.

Inclusion in the district carries no cost or regulatory mandate for property owners. However, if property owners want tax credits, they must "rehabilitate their properties according to preservative standards."
