West Nile Virus Fatality Reported in Gwinnett

Two victims of the disease have been reported.

The West Nile Virus threat has claimed a life in Gwinnett, according to a media report.

The Gwinnett Daily Post has reported that a 78 year old person has died from the mosquito-borne virus after being hospitalized. Also, another victim has recovered, the paper reported.

"At this time, I don't have any additional information on these incidents," said Karen Shields, communications director for the Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale County Health Departments.

In data updated Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention listed a total of 43 cases in Georgia this year, including four fatal.

The best way to avoid West Nile virus is to prevent mosquito bites, according to a statement by the Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale Health Departments.
