UConn's Moore Makes More History

The former Suwanee basketball star's latest honor sets her apart.

Maya Moore, the former Suwanee basketball star now with UConn, has earned a special place in basketball history.

Moore has been named winner of the prestigious Naismith Award, becoming the first two-time college winner and the first two-time high school winner of the Atlanta Tipoff Club's top honor. Moore played at Collins Hill High in Suwanee.

“With this award, Maya’s basketball legacy becomes cemented alongside some of the best who have ever played the game,” said Eric Oberman, Executive Director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. “She has accomplished something that no one else has done in the history of the Naismith awards, and the fact she’s an Atlantan means even more to our organization and our local community. We expect her to continue achieving great success as she furthers her playing career.”

Moore, a 6-0 forward, recently led UConn to its third straight women's Final Four appearance, losing to Notre Dame in the semifinals. The Huskies won the women's national title the previous two seasons. She is UConn's all-time leading women's scorer (3,036 points). The Huskies were 115-2 the past three seasons.

Moore was selected by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's National Voting Academy, composed of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. In addition, fan voting via text message accounted for 25 percent of the final results,  more than any other national college basketball award.
